Backdrop Hides `Made in China' Labels
ABC News ^

Posted on 01/22/2003 4:26:40 PM PST by Karsus

ST. LOUIS Jan. 22 —

Someone went to great lengths to ensure the backdrop for President Bush's sales pitch Wednesday on his economic stimulus plan sent all the right messages and none of the wrong.

Bush delivered his remarks from a warehouse floor at JS Logistics, a trucking, courier and warehouse business that provided a visual image for his argument that his proposal carries economy-boosting benefits for small businesses. The audience was flanked on all sides by piles of cardboard boxes with additional piles in front of and behind his podium.

Each one of the hundreds of boxes had a piece of paper obscuring its "Made in China" label.

White House spokeswoman Claire Buchan laughingly attributed the clearly gargantuan paper-affixing effort to an "overzealous volunteer" on the president's advance team.

A backdrop made-to-order for the White House filled the space directly behind Bush, which is most likely to show up on TV news clips of the event. Blaring a logo of "Strengthening America's Economy," it exactly mimicked the real-life box piles, down to perfectly aligned shelves.

Except the boxes on the backdrop were labeled, "Made in the USA."

Somehow I can't imagine ABC News writing this story about clinton. They are desperate to find anything at all to undermine Bush.

Maybe so. But that still should not give GWB a pass on this. Should it?

Also, I first saw this of Fox News Broadcast but was unable to locate it on foxnews.com. ABC was the first result from http://news.google.com/news?hl=en&q=bush+boxes+made+in+usa&btnG=Search+News

The Fox News report said it was the work of an over zealous volunteer that did it before they got there.

I think it's a moot point. It was a warehouse they were in, not a manufacturer. Are they supposed to forbid their customers from storing anything there but Made In USA products?

But the White House later acknowledged the stickers were affixed intentionally. White House Deputy Press Secretary Claire Buchan attributed the move to “an overzealous volunteer.”

“Obviously, it’s not appropriate,” she added.

Asked if an overzealous volunteer was responsible for the “MADE IN U.S.A.” backdrop, she smiled and said: “No.”

Who knows...might be a political ploy attacking so much purchasing from the PRC. Its not trade. Its purchasing.

I am glad this happened. President Bush needs to address the issues of manufacturing jobs going to China and the software jobs being shipped to offshore companies, mainly India.

These problems are not being addressed by the Republicans or Democrats. They are real and the country's economy is not going to get better until the issues are addressed.

I try to buy American, but it is almost impossible to buy toys made in the USA. Small appliances are also made in China.

Now, companies are sending research and development jobs to India. The work is usually third rate because the contractors don't have a stake in the company. The top execs continue to get their huge bonuses while the quality of the products continues to go downhill. Customer service jobs are also being shipped out of the country. It's hard to complain about the quality of the product when half the time I get someone that doesn't speak English very well.

It very well could be a protest focused squarely on the purchasing, non trade, arrangement with the PRC.

In other words "Bush is touting an economic plan to boost the economy, but everything on the shelves is MADE IN CHINA."

I say we should cut our imports of China made products by at least half.

The way we can do that is, first, sign FTA's with various countries. Second, raise the bar of entry to products from non FTA countries. Don't just raise the tax on Chinese made goods, but overall, raise them. Thus China won't be able to say we are picking on them. It will be all nice and legal too and would not require changes to PNTR or China being in the WTO.

It will make using the FTAs the most profitable way to import.

I am all for President Bush, but something here needs to change. Corporate America needs to change its tune.
