A scholar whose research supports private gun ownership has come under fire from critics who question whether he actually conducted a 1997 survey cited in his work.

John R. Lott Jr. strongly denies the accusations about his 1998 book, "More Guns, Less Crime."

I would think there would be hard copy somewhere that would provide proof that the survey occurred.

Whether Proffessor Lott's survey was conducted or not, it can easily be repeated, and as a matter of historical and scientific principal, should be repeated, to verify its validity.

Bellesiles fraudulent data was proven such with this principal; the information could not be verified, and on independent research, was contradicted. Bellesiles theory was not only unsupported, it was proven false, and in my opinion, a lie.

Well, we could take a survey right here and now. I've scared off intruders with a gun without even having the weapon in my hand... twice.

The first time I was only 19. When I discovered the intruder in my bathtub (he had crawled through a window) at 2 AM I completely lost it. I started screaming, "I have a gun you *blanken blankety blank*!! Get out of my house before I *blank* your *blanken blank*! How dare you?! Does your mother know you do this?!" (sounds of crying, "No! Please don't! I'm sorry! I'm sorry!" ...feet running...)"Hey! Get back here so I can *blankity*!"

You get the idea.

The second time was just three or four months ago. Everyone was sleeping (except me) and I heard someone outside trying to get into our shed. I peeked out, saw some figures moving and calmly yelled, "Hey honey! You'd better get your gun!" (sounds of scampering feet...)

What the criminal doesn't know can save you.

Lott's survey was repeated in 2002 and obtained similar results.
