Vance easily re-elected as state GOP chairman

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

SEATAC, Wash. -- Chris Vance of Auburn handily won a second two-year term as the state Republican Party chairman Saturday.

He received 81 votes to party activist Rose Strong's 25 at the GOP meeting in SeaTac. Former state Rep. Phil Fortunato of Kent had planned to run but pulled out, party spokeswoman Mary Lane said Saturday.

The win means Vance will be responsible for steering the state party through the 2004 presidential election.

Vance has been an aggressive spokesman for the state GOP. Although Democrats hold most statewide offices and solidified their state House majority in last year's elections, Republicans took over control of the state Senate and made gains at the local level.

The Republican Party in Washington State has a death wish, unless they elect competent leadership they are unlikely to recruit talented candidates and without talented candidates they can’t win elections.

That's close to Seattle, ha-ha. We hold the state senate by 1 seat. However 4 of the state senators are clones of Olympia Snowe, Lincoln Chafee, and Arlen Spector.

I don't care much for Vance. However, he's done some good things that doesn't get much publicity. In my county the "R's" hold the majority on the board of county commissioners for the first time in 34 years. We couldn't have done it without one of Vance's programs that paid us $5.00 for every "R" we IDed. Our county earned $12,000. that helped us hold the state senate, (our senator was the targeted seat the dims tried hard to win), and win the commissioners seat.

The real hope I have for '04 is the fact King County has elected a go-getter as county chair. For the past 8 years King County was chaired by a professor that didn't do anything positive except draw an $80,000 annual salary for himself.

This should help our state. Unfortunately as King County votes, the state gets sucked into the vortex.

Hopefully we'll see some good changes in '04, otherwise, you're right we're doomed.

I lived in Congressman Adam Smith’s Congressional District when Vance made his inept run for the seat in 2000. I tried calling, e-mailing and signing up at Republican events to assist Vance and I couldn’t even get a response until the weekend before the election when they e-mailed a request for someone to wave a campaign sign at passing motorists on election day. By that time I had already made commitments to the Bush campaign to wave their sign. While Smith works his district hard he is a corrupt little worm who should not be in office and if Vance didn’t want to run a campaign he shouldn’t have entered the race.

Yeah, you're right on with your observations, especially about comrade Smith.

I talked until I was blue in the face about Vance's ineptitude with our county chair and the two state reps that vote in state GOP issues. They acknowledged Vance's shortcommings. They were still going to vote for him come hell or high water because of the database he had built and the cash that came with it. As the article showed, many others thought the same.

Keep your fingers crossed for us!

"What a shame. The Republicans have big opportinues in 2004 in Washington state but this sends a strong signal they are on their way to blowing them"

It's frustrating. Just last night before the Super Bowl, I spoke to our county GOP chair about the Lincoln Day Dinner, our biggest fundraiser. They have arranged for a great speaker, Dave Riechart, King County Sheriff.

Here's the problem. The dinner is going to be held on the base of Puget Sound Naval Shipyard. This will require screening and to divulge our SS#'s. This because the only other suitable location is at a "country club", and the chair is worried about being identified as "country club Republican's" by the local dimocrats.

If that isn't bad enough, they plan to honor Sen. Bob Oke, RINO, for his 4 terms as senator. He was just re-elected in a squeaker election over his opponent a Green Party candidate! This guy is a nico-nazi, tax and spender, enviro-wacko, and is responsible for the new Tacoma Narrows TOLL Bridge fiasco. We live on a peninsula that is served by a state run ferry boat monopoly and the only other way off the land mass to Seattle/Tacoma is the Narrows bridge. The new bridge after you factor in the HOV, bike, and pedistrian lanes will provide 1 new lane.

I told her I thought it was crazy. You hand out the "gold watch" at retirement! Please pray for us.
