If the ACLU wants to sue the BSA for accepting federal funds while excluding those who openly adhere to the homosexual creed, then there are innumerable leftist organizations that can be sued on the same basis -- they accept federal funding while excluding from their ranks those who openly adhere to the conservative creed. Why don't we start with PBS? Then we can move on to Harvard and all the other ivy league and public universities. Deal me in. I'd happily join such a class-action lawsuit.

The ACLU should start a movement to protect the second amendment.

While I agree, it will be a cold day in hell when you see this happen. That cold day in hell is coming soon, however.

The only local Council I give to is my own, and I know where the money's going because I know everybody at Council. Your local Council likely reflects a somewhat more conservative reflection of your area's political/social attitudes.
If you still wish to be cautious, you can give a directed donation. My favorite would be to benefit the summer camp. Our summer camp built a new 40 foot climbing and rappeling tower with a $5000 directed donation. And if you don't want fame, pick someone you admire and have their name put on the plaque on it. They almost always can use new tents. Since the chief attribute that makes or breaks a summer camp is the staff, the majority of which are 15- to 18-year old kids living out of tents or crude cabins for all summer working with your sons rather than doing the movie/mall/video game bit that most kids seem to, perhaps you could donate some money to improve their lot, either their salaries or their living conditions.
National can use money, too, but understand that none of it will go down to a local Council. I would definitely give them a directed donation; say for one of the High Adventure bases like Philmont or Northern Tier. This will ensure that your money will be something that directly helps a young man or woman.

Great advice and info, Ron. Thanks!

Think about much time, energy and pdf documents could be saved if the federal government would just quit giving money to ANYBODY, Boy Scouts or otherwise. Boy Scouts, to stay its own (good) path, needs to resist the temptation to swill in the government's till. You take government money, and the government will insist on taking your freedom.

I agree, actually. "He who pays the piper calls the tune." While on the one hand I think that the BSA should have access to any government resources that any other educational Not-For-Profit, I don't favor the government giving faith-based organizations money, as I don't want the government to then start to interfere with their missions.

Agreed also, RonF. There's a big difference between being allowed (rightfully) to use national park land for a camporee, and accepting government grants of cash. Our country as a whole has been greatly federalized through the receipt of federal government cash and all the strings which are tied to it.

they accept federal funding while excluding from their ranks those who openly adhere to the conservative creed. Hell, let's start with the Black Congressional Caucus which even excludes black conservatives!
To: Bernard Marx
They're more like the Black Communist Caucus.
