Congressman Jim Saxton (Rep): U.S. Should Skip France Show

WASHINGTON (AP) — New Jersey Rep. Jim Saxton says the United States should not participate in this year's Paris Air Show if France continues to oppose military action against Iraq.

Saxton, a Republican, is chairman of a new House Armed Services subcommittee on terrorism, unconventional threats and capabilities. He is asking other House members to support a resolution urging American individuals, companies and armed forces to skip the air show this June if France does not alter its position.

France and Germany oppose U.S. plans for military action against Saddam Hussein.

``At this time in history when international cooperation is so important in combating terrorism and the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, it is important that the government of France understands how deeply Americans are committed to protecting the United States,'' Saxton said.

The Paris Air Show, the world's largest such exhibition, will take place this year June 15-22.

I think it would be far more appropriate to participate and give a few demonstrations of pin-point bombing.

This is far better than my idea of boycotting the wine (although I bought Australian wine yesterday and told the wine rep at the grocery, who happened to be stocking the shelves, why I was doing so.)

LOL! How about a precision jump on the Eiffel tower to hang a huge white flag?

Does anyone know of a "Buy Allied" page? I'm trying to make it a point to alter my buying habits, just for personal reasons. I'm trying to buy American first, then Allied. (UK,Aust.Etc.) and specifically avoiding China,EuroWeenies, etc.

But I don't know where to find anything from the smaller countries that are siding with us on Terrorism.I'd like to show my support for them even if it is just switching a purchase or two. It's really interesting to pay attention to the labels on products for a week or two to put your buying power into perspective....

I don't know of any site with that information. I have been switching my wine purchases from French to Australian and Italian, and Lancome lost my business in cosmetics. If the French don't shape up pretty quickly, I am going to have to find another perfume when my supply of Chanel runs out. That will be the true test for me, as I have worn that fragrance for 20 years.

I don't have to worry about my wine choices. I don't like the "refined" wines--give me some five dollar Asti Spumante and I'm in heaven. LOL

LOL, I'm the same way with Joy! The lady at Saks who's been taking care of me for 20 odd years was SHOCKED the other day when I said "Well, let's try something different, and NOT FRENCH!"

If and when some enterprising Freeper, or group thereof, comes up with such a list (either pro- or anti-), please ping me. I think voting with our wallets (and backing it up with letters or phone calls to the appropriate corporate personnel explaining our actions) is one of the strongest ways to make our voices heard.

Much better the US should stage its own show at the same time.

We haven't bought French wine in a long time. I guess we have pedestrian tastebuds.

I wish L'Oreal hadn't bought Maybelline. They got rid of the only make-up/foundation that ever worked for my very pale skin (and which didn't make me look like the living dead).

I can't think of much that is French, that we buy. I definitely will look into buying more products from the countries which support us.

If nothing else, we can visit websites of companies in those countries (upping their "hits"), buy foreign language children's picture books online, teach our children about the history and tradition of some of those countries (a new twist on diversity).

BTW, the French settlers in Illinois were allowed to keep slaves, even when involuntary servitude was outlawed for the rest of the State.

Slavery In Illinois: Jarrot v. Jarrot , by Vincent J. Lopinot

... There existed a class of slaves in Illinois ... This was an open violation of the Northwest Ordinance (1787) and the constitution of Illinois (1818). This class of slaves were those held by the descendants of the early French settlers of the Illinois country. It was not until 1845 that a case arose questioning the right to hold these French slaves in bondage.

The case was Jarrot v. Jarrot (1845) and it came out of the old French settlement of Cahokia.

Yeah, let's bite off our noses to spite our faces while we're at it.

We don't participate in the Paris Air Show to honor the French. We go there to sell our technology.

I don't buy many items from France, but here are a few that folks might not associate w/ France.

BIC pens, lighters

DJEEP lighters

I think several ball point pen Cos. are French.

I'd like the boycott anything that requires me to stumble through the French instructions to get to the English version. ( that would be almost everything). Drives me crazy.
