U.S. military instructors have begun training Iraqi opposition volunteers at a base in Hungary ahead of possible American-led military operations against Iraq.
U.S. Army spokesman Major Robert Stern said instructors began training the first group of volunteers Monday at Taszar air base, 200 kilometers southeast of Budapest.
Major Stern said the first phase of the program will begin with courses on self-defense, laws of armed conflict, human rights and ethical decision-making. Later training will involve conduct of civil military operations, and guide and liaison work.
Hungary has given the United States permission to train up to 3,000 Iraqi and Arab volunteers to act as translators and guides in the event of operations pressing Iraq to give up its weapons of mass destruction. The Hungarian government has said none of the volunteers will be trained in combat.
