Va. trooper shot during water contamination investigation

By the Associated Press

Published February 4, 2003

ACCOMACK, Va. --

A Virginia state trooper was shot Tuesday night in Accomack County while investigating a possible plot to contaminate water supplies.

Col. Gerald Massengill, state police superintendent, said the trooper had been taken to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Massengill said the trooper was executing a search warrant on Virginia's Eastern Shore between 10 and 10:30 p.m. in connection with an investigation into a possible plot to contaminate water supplies.

The investigation was being conducted by the state police, the FBI and the Accomack Sheriff's Office. The FBI could not immediately be reached and a dispatcher at the Sheriff's Department could not provide any information.

Massengill did not release the trooper's name or any information about possible suspects or other injuries.

The dude's name is 'Massengill?' Must have been a tough time in junior high.

It makes you wonder what kind of water supply he was actually threatening.

Wow- You really brought home the bacon, csvset!

Looks like maybe I wasn't too far off (assuming there really was a plan) in thinking they might be targeting the bay for some form of eco/bio terrorism to destroy the fishing industry.

But I do owe the LEOs an apology. They obviously didn't send him alone :)

I wonder if these guys are some of the fellows that got here by jumping the merchant ships?

And I'd sure like to know where they got their fraudulent papers!

From the name, I wonder if this guy is originally part of one of the Italian cells?

Here's hoping the LEOs found lots of evidence and a big fat trail to some more of these guys.

PS-

A big thank you to the LEOs who saved many lives--whether these critters turn out to be terrorists or part of some drug operation.

We wish the officer who was wounded a speedy recovery.

Just wanted you to know that we DO appreciate your efforts on our behalf!

I suspect it would be about 10,000 spots down the Al Queda target list.

Amen. The Eastern Shore of Virginia is beautiful country, but it would not be mistaken for Manhattan.

Immigration documents on file with a seafood company where Campos worked do not exist in INS files, and the Social Security number Campos provided to the business belongs to someone else, the records say.

There's a real shocker.

Ipolito Campos

It might be a Portuguese name, (if that's who he really is). The story has a bizarre aspect to it. We'll have to wait and see who the deceased are.

I believe Campos is just a Spanish name, not Italian. How do we know he was actually going to poison anything? Maybe he was just nuts.

Just another illegal alien here to commit the acts of terror that Americans don't want to do. < /sarcasm >

We don't know that he was going to poison anything. It could even be a drug war, with some rival turning in this group. But two of the group are dead--they didn't shoot it out with a task force just because they were illegals. Last I heard, we had some 500,000 illegals who'd already been ordered deported running around free in the country.

Why does everyone assume terrorists will only attack cities?

Here's my two cents worth. They hit cities, so we all think we are safe in the country. People in cities are scared but, for the rest of us , life goes on.

Now, they hit Chappell, Nebraska and everyone, everywhere, starts to wonder who's next.

To me, that's terrorisn. When everybody, even those in Nebraska, are looking over their shoulders and under the hood of the car, the terrorist has achieved his goal.

I suspect it would be about 10,000 spots down the Al Queda target list.

But a it's an isolated place that's only a short drive drive to Annapolis, or south across the bay bridge tunnel takes you to Norfolk. The first major areas north and south would be high profile Navy targets. DC metro area and all points north are in easy reach. It could have beeb being used as a staging area.

Seems odd that there hasn't been a peep one about this in national news. Or at least, not that I have heard.

Lots of people travel to France

You're not far off. I recall whole neigborhoods of Paris filled with North Africans.

I'll bet it has to be a factor in Chirac's Quisling behavior....that plus the fact that he's a cheese eating surrender monkey and a corrupt former mayor of Paris.

Now, they hit Chappell, Nebraska

They hit Chappell, NE? Which part of the state is that (can't reach for my R-McN right now)? And when/how did they hit it? This is news to this ex-suburban, now rural, FReeper.

I don't see anything odd about the location. This morning's Wall Street Journal had a long article on militant Muslims in jail and the heavy recruiting that goes on (to say nothing of the funding from the Saudi Government). Here's a quote:

"The search [of the home of an Iraqi Islamic school director] was part of a broad investigation into Islamic organizations and charities in Virginia, suspected by federal agents of helpting to move money to foreign terrorist groups, including Hamas and Al Qaeda."

In other words, there's a lot of potentially terrorist groups and activity in Virginia. I think there's also an al Fuqra community down there. There's no reason this guy with the Hispanic surname couldn't have been a Jose Padilla-type recruit to some terrorist organization.
