We've had reports that there are pieces on the ground in California and in Arizona," said retired Gen. Michael Kostelnik, deputy associate administrator for shuttle and space station activities at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration.

He said credible reports and e-mail correspondence indicate the items include material from thermal tiles or a wing. NASA specialists were dispatched yesterday to check the reports, he said. Each tile is numbered to pinpoint where it fits on the shuttle.

I'm sure I'm not the only one here that is well fed up with neanderthal reactions .... Everytime anyone tries to look or think outside the "box", they get character assassinations and made fun of until they are browbeat back into line. And while I'm on the subject... this posting of join dates on members is about as mature as a fresh pile of cowcrap....

Oh, ALS!!! Well said! BRAVO!!

Remember the Challenger disaster where the launch control director was yelling RTLS RTLS after the explosion at 83 seconds? RTLS stands for Return To Launch Site.

He yelled it AFTER the explosion??

Ummm .. isn't that a bit to late???

RE jettisoning cargo to reduce weight ...

1. In Apollo 13, cargo wasn't jettisoned into space, it was put into the lunar module, which was left behind.

2. Jettisoning it into space, if they had the ability, would just leave stuff drifting dangerously around in the same orbit.

I think they had an opportunity to investigate while the Columbia was in space, but they didn't.

.......

Wasn't it you that found out NASA never even told the crew of the problem?

Actually, there were and are different possibilities other than the abort routines; but the people who used to be at N.A.S.A. and were not locked into a bureaucratic mindset which prohibits examination of the possibilities ... do not have the strength in numbers, there, to make the difference.

El Gato,

After I posted my question, I saw another post on a different thread by John Jamieson (#262 on the 9:34pm thread regarding NYT's "Columbia Was Beyond Help, Officials Say"), also suggesting jettison of cargo. Poster Jamieson was the one who originally raised the excess weight concern a few days ago.

Do you have any guess how much weight might have been sloughed off if some ad hoc emergency procedure were devised?

Because NASA may not have known on a timely basis that there was a life-and-death emergency, perhaps they did not review the universe of unorthodox procedures (such as jettison of equipment) that might be technically difficult but not impossible.
