Truthfully, for home defense, a 12 ga pump filled with most anything can't be beat. Even #7 1/2 bird shot at 20 feet will inflict a wicked wound that will take the fight right out of an intruder.

Hopefully all Freepers are aware this is a myth. A shotgun shell sends forth a pattern of shot that will expand the area it will hit so that at 25 yards one is covering an area measured still in inches of diameter. The shot expands at a relatively constant rate once it leaves the barrel. Most house will rarely have free shot of over 35 feet. More common will be shots at less than 15 feet as someone kicks in a door.

This is not to say that a shotgun is not an execellent home defense pice just that like everything it has its limitations.

May I respectfully suggest to the esteemed journalistic dufus that he borrow an AK from someone, go WAAAYY out in the boonies and attempt to penetrate an engine block with rifle fire. He'll penetrate the paint on the block, and that's about it. He can expect an unpredictable ricochet from each shot, as well- which is why he needs to really be in the middle of nowhere and damn well check to make sure that he is.

With that statement they prove that they know NOTHING about this subject. A full fledged .50 Barrett firing armor piercing rounds won't go through a cast iron engine block. This is just a bunch of twaddle to frighten and confuse the sheeple.

From a pure fact point of view, this article is actually correct. The significance of pulling the trigger on a -rifle- caliber weapon in your house is

- you will become deaf
- it -will- go through your entire house (barring the odd collision with stuff like a fridge). Rifle rounds are nasty nasty nasty.

Most people don't appreciate the incredible power difference between pistol rounds and rifle rounds. Its a world of difference.

While, I certainly think everyone should own an AR just on general principle - for actual close quarters home defense nothing beats a plain old shotgun (pick your flavor).

I am so sorry, but the main purpose of an assault rifle is to wound, NOT kill. Main reasoning here, it takes 5 people to deal with a wounded man, and if you kill someone, they will leave the body until the fighting is over.

AK's and M-16's, their bullets tumble, that way when they hit mass they bounce around and inflict incredible wounds. Once one of these bullets hits a body, it is most likely going to stay there, assault rifles are NOT great for home defense, they are large, unwieldy and you have to be a fairly good shot. But, this guy is full of crap when it comes to "going through" someone.

Give me a 12 gauge anytime for home defense, lots of power, will take out the intruder with not much effort or skill, and makes a most respecting sound when loaded up. A perp's WORST nightmare is a homeowner with a shotgun coming down a hallway
