Support Grows for Australia Joining Iraq War--Poll
Yahoo News ^ | 2/22/03

SYDNEY (Reuters) - A growing number of Australians support the country joining a war against Iraq, with or without the backing of the United Nations, according to a newspaper poll published on Sunday, a week after global anti-war demonstrations.

Twenty-four percent of respondents to the Sun-Herald/Taverner Research poll backed Australian involvement in military action against Iraq without U.N. approval, up from just six percent in an AC Nielsen poll four weeks ago, the Sun-Herald newspaper reported.

Around 67 percent of those surveyed said they would support Australia's involvement if it was backed by the United Nations, up from 62 percent a month ago, with the strongest support coming from male conservative voters.

The poll of 600 people conducted in New South Wales showed 29 percent objected to Australia joining a war on Iraq under any circumstances, down from 30 percent four weeks ago.

The Sun-Herald said the poll also showed 36 percent of those surveyed wanted conservative Prime Minister John Howard to stay until the end of his current term.

Howard, a staunch ally of the United States, has come under fire for sending 2,000 troops to join the U.S. and British military build-up facing Iraq before the U.N. has made any firm decision to take action.

Last week hundreds of thousands of peace protesters took to the streets of Australia's biggest cities as part of global demonstrations calling on the United States not to go to war with Iraq.

The Sun-Herald said Vice President Dick Cheney was due to visit Sydney and Canberra within the next six weeks to thank Australia for its support in the "war against terrorism."

It took about 2 weeks for it to start sinking in. The world is finally realizing the anti-war protestors are communist/socialists and do not want democracy in the world. Pretty soon they will be history!

They must not believe that the islamofascists hate them and their culture.

I guess a chem/bio attack will convince them that these people are not DEFENDING anything. They are on the offense.

Yes, great news about the Aussies' increased support.

For once media coverage (of the anti-war crowds around the world) probably did some good; seeing the circus-like atmosphere of every "demonstration" probably helped US out quite a bit. Who in their right mind could think those Hollyweirdos, old hippies, protestor wannabees, ad nauseum, have ANY credibility at all???

I think I'll pay attention to the likes of Bush, Blair, Rumsfeld, Powell and Rice instead, thank you...

Just not a meaningful one. A population of less than that of California alone means that Australia really just can't field that many troops with its volunteer military, nor can it have the tax base to sustain modern military operations for long.

They can help us to convince the UN to act though. They can support President Bush as he makes the case. That is a huge help right now.

Australia's military expenditure is $9.3 billion.

Thats more than Spain,Israel,Canada,Indonesia and about 95% of the rest of the world spends.

I think 2000 troops plus SAS,18 hornets and a few frigates currently in the gulf are meaningful. Its more than the rest of the world(besides US & UK)has sent.

I've been reading Aussie newspapers since the Bali bombing.Howard has been standing by America and taking hits for it. I am sure President Bush is very grateful for the help and so am I.

The best way to end war and ensure peace is to kill the enemy.

Come off it!

They did a damn fine job and stayed the course in Nam! Yes I said Nam!

I'd rather have a lone Austrailian soldier standing next to me than the whole boodly French Army!
