Janeane Garofalo: 'It Wasn't Hip' to Protest Clinton's Wars
Newsmax ^ | Sunday Feb. 23, 2003

Posted on 02/23/2003 12:16:40 PM PST by nickcarraway

Comedienne-turned-peace activist Janeane Garofalo offered a stunning admission on Sunday, explaining that she and her fellow anti-war protesters didn't stage huge demonstrations when President Clinton launched attacks on Iraq, Bosnia, Afghanistan and the Sudan because "it wasn't very hip" to protest the former president.

Asked by "Fox News Sunday's" Tony Snow why peace protesters like herself didn't object to Clinton's wars, Garofalo explained:

"I absolutely did. I did not support Operation Desert Fox. It's just that you didn't know me very well back then. Nobody really was interested in listening to me back then."

Then she added, by way of explaining why the anti-Clinton protests never gelled, "It wasn't very hip."

Garofalo went on to claim that Hollywood actors Susan Sarandon and Tim Robbins led protests against Clinton's 1998 Iraq attack, saying that "there was a lot of protest, just as there was against the first Gulf War."

A Lexis-Nexis search for Dec. 1998, the month Clinton bombed the daylights out of Baghdad, failed to turn up a single report that mentioned either Sarandon or Robbins protesting the attacks.

A similar search for the month of Feb. 2003 turned up 124 reports on Sarandon protesting President Bush's Iraq policy.

A google search didn't turn up anything either...Sarandon was apparently too busy protesting the IMF and getting her picture on puff pieces published on the World Socialist Web Site.

However, it's obviously 'hip' now (heaven save us from the '60's...will they NEVER go away??) to protest President Bush, especially for those slaves to fashion in the entertainment industry.

What is wrong with Tony Snow and FNC? WHY have these Hollywood idiots on at all?

Close to 300 million people in this country and we have to see these idiots on FNC??

This isn't "Entertainment Tonight". There are more than enough shows on TV that deal with these shallow people and their fame.

They have no more business on a serious news peogram than George Will has in stage or in a movie.

I don't blame these idiots for spouting off; I blame the media for publicizing the views of ignorami.

We should expect better from FNC.

I made this sign back in 1999 to protest Klintons "wag the dog" bombing campaign.

Originally it said,"Where have all the Hippies Gone?"

It was perceived as entirely "un-hip" by the Libs from Channel 5 News.

To be a Liberal, means to be a HYPOCRITE.

Isn't it the "hip" thing these days to go to Iraq and volunteer yourself as a human shield? This b*tch and most of Hollyweird (especially "I'm-leaving-if-Bush-wins" Baldwin) should put their money where their foul mouths are, go to Iraq, and chain themselves to a radio tower.

One day of bombing is not really a situation where these hollyweirdos could gather together to protest. I don't recall them ever protesting any military action Clinton ever took.Maybe she is lying about it.

"Ah, so it's not about the lives which will be lost in a war, it's about being "hip"! Now I understand, and I say she is hyp, as in hypocrite."

That's a great line, so your double post is forgiven. I herby make a motion to refer to all anti-war club as 'HYPPIES' from now on.

Hopefully, I'll remember...

The internet is THE form of mass, instant communication that is open to all, a truth forum where selective memory or outright lies can be exposed in mere minutes. Conservatives base their opinions on facts and truth, liberals base their statements on lies and rhetoric or "feelings". Truth owns the Internet.

The Internet didn't get here any too soon. It will be the eventual downfall of liberalism. It already has reaped great benefits:

It helped get XXX42 impeached, and kept Gore from manufacturing enought votes in Florida to steal the election.

"when did clinton attack afghanistan?"

That would be the 1988 bombing of an empty aspirin factory and some empty tents...which prompted President Bush to explain to the world after 9/11 that THIS time we weren't going to 'fire a $10,000 missile into an empty tent and hit a camel in the butt'

Comedienne-turned-peace activist Janeane Garofalo

Considering that she has failed in the former, perhaps she'll "make it" in the latter?

I think not.

Wow - now i GET IT!! You have to protest 'hip' things. Well, damn - Janeane Garafolo's stellar career just proves it. A hack as a comedian, a flop as an actress in one D minus film, I can see why she wouldn't want to damage her career. Didja notice when a Hollywood type couldn't get a job at Starbuck's, they change their moniker to 'activist'? The only reason she doesn't go to the protests is she can't afford an SUV on minimum wage.

At least she's "honest" about her hypocrisy.

Let's make it simpler, shall we?

If you're a particularly slimy, raping, murderous, oily, pathologically lying Democrat, you can wage war with Canada and get away with it without a peep from the Left.

If you happen to be a Christian, conservative-leaning Republican, attacking Hitler as he marches on Miami would get you crucified.

HELLO, LEFT WING!!!! IT'S CALLED A "DOUBLE STANDARD".

My email to the SacBee Ombudsman today. Not that this is probably about the tenth I have sent regarding this type of coverage. The first description are in the article. The second are what they should also have put in the article.

2/23/03

Signs of the Times (Page B1)

Jeanie Keltner > "peace activist"
Jeanie > "retired English Professor and well-know local activist."
Duane Cambell > "a peace activist"

The rest of the story:

Jeanie Keltner >>>> Editor-at-Large of Because People Matter, a socialist newspaper.

Duane Campbell >>> Member of Democratic Socialist of America

The organization "Move On" which seems to be the umbrella for the Hollyweird anti-war crowd was formed in Sept. 1998 with the charter of protecting "King Klinton" from impeachment. I imagine that any attempt to change the subject, such as the Bombing of Iraq, was to be applauded.

Is Garafalo a member of "Move On"? If she is, then your assessment that the Desert Fox Operation (A tribute to Rommel?) was applauded by the organization. These people are hypocrites - no one except a few Republicans who questioned Klinton's motives protested. Certaintly not the left, which seemingly became Hawks back then.
