California local governments facing cuts amid state budget crisis

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif.(AP) - Anescia Boyd's job for the county is to interview down-and-out residents to determine if they're eligible for welfare benefits.

Now she's worried she may become one of them, a possible victim of the state's record budget deficit and its potential ripple effects across California cities and counties.

Republicans in the Democratically controlled Legislature also have blamed Davis and other Democrats for overspending and generally oppose increasing taxes. Without an increase, however, local government officials warn of dire consequences.
