Excellent response - but the reports coming out of Iraq (clandestine reports) are that the Christians inside that country fear more for their lives under an Islamic-dominated country than one dominated by Saddam.

What is the penalty for not converting to Islam in Saudi Arabia - the country just south of Iraq?

What is the penalty for not converting to Islam in Iran - the country just west of Iraq?

You apparently did not read my post very carefully. I granted that Iraqi Christians would be worse off under Islamic fundamentalism. I challenged the notion that Saddam or Islamism are the only options, or that there is even reason to believe that Iraq is particularly threatened by Islamism.

Iraq is not the same kind of country as Saudi Arabia or Iran, which are very different from each other. The Saud family has had this arrangement with the Wahhabis for over 200 years -- Saudi Arabia is ruled a crowd of really rich and really corrupt barbarians in sick collusion with a sadistic cult. The Iranians got an Islamist regime in haste and have now repented at leisure for some time. The problem in Iran was that the people were ready for democracy, the Shah wouldn't give it to them, so eventually they exploded and made really dumb choices. There is no reason to suppose that Iran is incapable of a religiously tolerant regime. Nor is there reason to suppose that such a regime could not exist in Iraq.

I repeat: No Christian in that interview said, "We want to keep Saddam." Had they thought that, they would have had no reason to be looking terrified at the question. They could have simply said: "We Christians in Iraq all love the Great Leader." That is the Right Answer; refusing to answer is much more dangerous. What I hear in that interview is people who don't dare tell the truth but are too honest too lie.

"We would be worse off under Islamic fundamentalists" is not the same statement as "We want to keep Saddam."
