People applying for gun permits in Hawai'i were rejected at a significantly lower rate than the national average, the state attorney general's office reported yesterday.

Of the 6,990 firearms permit applications processed in Hawai'i in 2002, only 103, or 1.5 percent, were rejected. The national average was 2.3 percent.

I hope this type of article is not a left-wing trend towards the concept of a "quota" for gun permit rejections as compared with some meaningless average.

This is bullshit, of course.

Hawaii is one of only a very few states that requires a permit to own a firearm.

There isn't any national average to compare their issuance rate to, because the vast majority of states don't require permits to own, only to carry.

Of course, Hawaii does have a permit to carry law on the books, but they never issue them.

I thought Hawaii was a gun-free paradise?

On second thought, maybe I just completely missed all the news headlines about the daily road-rage shootouts and gun-slingin' blastings on the surfing beaches?

Perhaps it's because those who have something on their record that would cause their application to be rejected already know so, so they don't bother to apply for permits.

I think people who apply for permits for guns are a lot less likely to storm off in a fit of rage and shoot somebody...of course they could just knife them, so should we outlaw knives??? i don't think so. As for a 'quota' I don't think anyone wants that; I haven't heard that said. I think people who are gonna kill other people shouldn't have guns. of course it is impossible to tell. but just because i think some kinds of gun control are okay doesn't mean i think hunters and sportspeople shouldn't be allowed to have guns.

New York State requires permits for handguns. So if you
reside in Albany County, the chances of obtaining apistol permit are close to nil. I lived there for 6 years and kept
my permit that I obtained in St Lawrence County so I did not
become embroiled in their political issue of gun ownership.

Under 7000 guns in a whole state in a whole year? I agree, this is an outrage. Way too low.

What the 'rejection rates' for those applying for a permit to attend church, own property, or read books from the local library?

Of course, Hawaii does have a permit to carry law on the books, but they never issue them.

IIRC, for a long time, there was a grand total of one CCW issued in the whole state -- to either the wife or daughter of the chief of police, or some such bigwig.
