(GOPUSA News) -- ' U.S., British, and other intelligence agencies are scrambling to verify reports that Iraq's top missile scientist, General Mohammed Sa'id al-Darraj, was murdered on the orders of Saddam Hussein.

Under United Nations Resolution 1441, Iraq is required to provide "immediate, unimpeded, unrestricted, and private access to all officials and other persons" that the U.N. inspectors "wish to interview." The resolution adds the weapons inspectors may, "at their discretion conduct interviews inside or outside of Iraq, may facilitate the travel of those interviewed and family members outside of Iraq, and that such interviews may occur without the presence of observers from the Iraqi government."

Sa'id al-Darraj is reported to have been in charge of Iraq's missile program and was believed to have been listed as a candidate to be interviewed by the U.N. weapons inspectors. However, British news media such as the U.K. Telegraph, quoting Arab sources, are reporting that shortly before Saddam Hussein agreed to the United Nations demand that all of Iraq's Al Samoud 2 missiles be destroyed, he ordered his top missile scientist, General Mohammed Sa'id al-Darraj be summoned to one of his presidential palaces for an interview by Iraqi officials.

The Iraqi officials are said to have been ordered to murder the missile scientist if they had concerns he would reveal details of Iraqi violations to U.N. weapons inspectors.

Relatives of the General said that he had been in a meeting with Iraqi officials hours before his death, and the officials did not trust him to remain silent about Iraqi violations of the United Nations resolutions. Sa'id al-Darraj had told them that the Iraqi officials wanted him dead and had slipped him a drink laden with poison. Just prior to succumbing to the poison's lethal effect Sa'id al-Darraj said he was poisoned by the government to keep him from revealing anything about Iraq's missile program.

It was reported that Sa'id al-Darraj had lost favor with Saddam at the end of last year and that he was removed from his position with the Iraqi government and stripped of his status as the head of the Iraqi missile program about three months ago...'
