TV has higher standards? Newt Minnow described TV as a "wasteland" some 40 years ago. And it gone downhill ever since. Who would have thought that we would look back with admiration and nostalgia to "Leave it to Beaver"?

"Leave It To Beaver" had "bright line" moral precepts and espoused decent, upright behavior. The people you were supposed to like in that show wouldn't have been comfortable working in X42's White House.
