Washington -- Sen. Dianne Feinstein and President Bush seem headed for a showdown over her effort to renew the federal assault weapons ban after the administration hedged Tuesday on a presidential pledge to support the renewal.

The semiautomatic assault weapons bill, which barely passed in 1994, stands as a legislative hallmark of Feinstein's 10 years in the Senate. It is due to expire in September 2004, unless Congress votes to reauthorize it and Bush signs the bill. In his 2000 presidential campaign, Bush came out for renewal and for an additional provision to ban the import of ammunition- feeding devices of 10 bullets or more.

Well golly, poor widdle Di-Fi is upset. Isn't that just a shame.

Yeah, sit down, you haggard, freedom-hating old biddy, and STFU while you're at it.

On the other hand, what have YOU done to see that this blatantly unconstitutional legislation sunsets in 2004?

Who sticks their finger in a bullet hole to get a pulse? Good grief, what kind of a ghoul is this woman?

Well darn. I did a search and it didn't come up. What with that, I wonder? Maybe something to do with the server probs and slowness that John Robinson has been chasing down lately?

Now that the U.S. military is busy in Iraq, N. Korea threatens nuclear war, and NATO allies are turning tail; the time for a well armed militia is now.

Bush and Ashcroft had better remember who helped put them in office and what states carried them over the edge and why.

If they cave in to Feinkinstein on this one, they will lose in 2004 - GUARENTEED!!

"I will hold him to his campaign promise, and I think the American people will hold him to it. I don't think there is any evidence that the American people want assault weapons on their streets," she said.

No, but I have nothing against select fire rifles hanging out in my safe. Leaving them in the street is no way to store a firearm.

I really wish GWB had not said he supported the ban, especially that silly full capacity magazine part.

The search trick is to change the 2nd box to "order by post time". I've suggested to Jim and John that the order be changed twice without responses, so I am not going to worry about it if they aren't.

We are living in an interesting era in history.

I can see situations where Americans are openly carrying rifles on their backs Israeli style, after a series of Islamikazi terror attacks on soft targets.

Or I can see a total ban on entire classes of weapons such as "assault rifles" (semi-autos) and "sniper rifles" (scoped deer rifles).

Obviously, the second outcome (Feinstein's wet dream) is the one the book is based upon.

If the Congress puts out ANY kind of renewal of the AWB, be it partial, whole or (gag) expanded/permanent, and Bush fails to veto it, then I will NEVER vote for ANY Republican, EVER AGAIN!

Before anyone on FR, or any RNC lurkers, doubt me, here's a bit of history:

1) I grew up with the idea that conservative Republicans were the good guys and that the Dems, esp. the liberal ones, were the enemy. I voted accordingly.

2) I proudly voted for Reagan 4 times (incl. primaries), and voted for Bush 41 equally as proudly, believing that he had absorbed and adopted some of Reagan's political philosophy during the prior 8 years.

3) I used to give a fairly good amount of my hard-earned, after-tax dollars to various Republicans - until 1989, that is. What's significant about that year? It was the year that GWB's father imposed a ban on imported "assault rifles." I have never contributed to the Republican Party or any Republican candidate since that betrayal of our basic rights.

4) I was so ticked off by how Bush 41 mishandled the end of the Persian Gulf War (allowing Hussein to stay in power, and allowing the Kurds to be massacred after encouraging them to revolt), and with the violation of the "Read my lips - no new taxes" pledge, that I didn't vote for him to be re-elected. More to the point, I voted FOR Clinton because I wanted to send a message and I (foolishly, it turns out) thought that this loser would be a one-termer like the previous Democrap loser, Jimmy (I live to appease) Carter.

OK, I think that I've established that no one party owns my vote. I like GWB, and I think that he's got the best character of any president since Reagan. Though I disagree with a few things that he's done (notably, signing the CFR monstrosity and pushing the Patriot Act and similar legislation with police-state potential), I am prepared to vote for him again....

UNLESS HE FAILS TO VETO ANY TYPE OF RENEWAL OF ANY PART OF THE "ASSAULT WEAPONS BAN."

The whole concept of illegally limiting the rights of the vast majority of the population because of the criminal or psychotic actions of a very few, simply based on the supposition that if the Fedgov has the power to do something then it is OK, must die ASAP. This is the perfect time for the Republican Party to grow a pair. Because if it doesn't, it loses my vote on every level of government - forever! I won't make the mistake of voting for Dems again, but I'll stay home.

It is time to take a stand. The Republicans have campaigned time and time again (and taken lots of money from gun owners and gun rights organizations) in exchange for the promise to actively oppose further restrictions on our RKBA. Well, now is the time to collect on that promise. If it is a lie, then the liars will lose their power, because I know that I'm not alone - at least hundreds of thousands, and possibly a couple of million votes, depend on this particular piece of legislation. Since the last presidential election was decided by only a few hundred votes, I think that the Republicans should pay attention. They better, if they like to be in power.
