SAN DIEGO (AP) - California Highway Patrol officers did not know a stolen pickup truck was loaded with more than 20 people when they decided to stop it with spike strips, the department said Monday.

Speeding west on a San Diego County interstate Sunday, the driver swerved around a spike strip, slammed into the center divide and rolled the 1998 Chevrolet pickup onto its side, tossing his passengers onto the pavement.

"The physics could not be worse," she said. "What is so troublesome about this is that lessons never seem to be learned. This is a replay, virtually, of the previous deadly crashes."

Maybe the migrant workers ought to pay attention to this so they don't overload their vehicles before they go on high speed chases.

Every single occupant of the vehicle was a criminal. The illegal aliens for entering the U.S. illegally. The driver for evading the CHP and assisting illegal aliens to travel in the U.S. No sympathy here.

"They just have to stop chasing migrants to death," Smith said.

Chasing migrants to death? This statement just sounds so odd.

It wouldn't do any good. The problem with Mexico is that they lack a vital component of the social and legal infrastructure needed to produce wealth, and as a result they are hopelessly impovershed and will remain so until this fundamental problem is addressed.

In Mexico's case the missing components are a social infrastructure where corruption is not tolerated by the average citizen or the average government official, and a legal infrastructure capable of addressing corruption in an effective manner. This is a fatal one-two punch that dooms that sad country to continual poverty. Until this is addressed the only thing that will change will be the numbers and the despair of the continuing waves of illegals crossing the Rio Grande.

What is so troublesome about this is that lessons never seem to be learned.

I agree. This is a tragic, tragic thing, and we need to do something about it. I cannot accept that the richest country in the world can set back and let this happen.

We need to do something- we need to broadcast commercials on Mexican TV showing what happens when you cross into the country illegally, and try to run from law enforcement.

Twenty other people, including a 9-year-old boy, suffered injuries ranging from fair to critical.

Who pays the hospital bills?

If we outlawed vans, this would stop. And they probably didn't even get 10 mpg.

"Thank goodness those illegal alien maniacs didn't run over any American citizens." The one chase I watched on TV they did hit several American cars and then threw the camper shell off trying to cause an accident to stope the police, funny how the artical failed to tell you about that.
