Seems to me like they would give the order to commanders, and save the GO for the pilots till the last minute.

March 18 is the Jewish holiday of Purim, the same day that Gulf War I ended.

Of course, Purim in Israel is also a day of practical jokes, like April Fools Day.

The war will begin April 1.

I used to monitor AF1 and AF2. I, however find it doubtful that the U.S. forces would say in the open on HF or UHF that "hey guys we are going to start the war on the 18th at 0300 hours."

Now they might have said that we want such and such assets in theater on the 18th, but I would suspect that you could only be certain of a war kickoff if you know the go code.

This guy is said to be a terrific monitor, and he may be right, but he must have arrived at his conclusion based on some sort of mosaic.

Further, this guy is not likely to be intercepting any really high level stuff, as that would be going in and out as encrypted SATCOMs.

Once the battle starts, however, it is possible to pick up lots of juicy stuff on the tactical frequencies. During GWI it was possible to pick up some commos from the tank battles in the 30MHz FM range. I'm not sure whether it would be as easy this time because the U.S. has spread spectrum and frequency agile equipment available.
