Hindus Pressure Government in India to Restrict Foreign Preachers

A Hindu group is calling for a government crackdown to stop other Western Christians from entering the country to teach at conferences and churches, following an attack on a visiting American preacher.

The Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) is preparing a list of missionaries “who are on tourist visas but go on an evangelization spree” once in India, Kerala state organizing secretary Kummanam Rajasekharan [said].…“They are often speakers at Bible conventions and religious gatherings.”

Under Indian law, foreign visitors granted tourist visas are allowed to sightsee and visit relatives but are prohibited from preaching. Joseph Cooper, 67, from New Castle, Pennsylvania, was asked to leave the country [recently] for speaking at a Bible convention at Trivandrum, the Kerala state capital.

He was seriously injured January 15 in an attack by Hindu extremists wielding swords, sticks and crowbars. According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Cooper entered India on a tourist visa 11 times in the last 10 years. He denied claims that he spoke critically of Hinduism.

Rajasekharan [said] that the VHP launched a countrywide campaign to find out how many missionaries on tourist visas were involved in preaching and evangelism. Fifty had already been identified in Kerala alone. “We will submit our list of these illegal preachers.…We want the government to issue them ‘quit India’ notices,” he said.

It's not going to stop missionaries from giving the Word of God to those who are thirsty for Living Water.
If the Hindu extremists really believe that it will, they are more detached from reality than I could imagine.

Very true..on a recent mission trip to India, one in our group was approached by 2 gentlemen. He was about 1/2 way through sharing the gospel, and they informed him they were undercover detectives, with Delhi Police. My friend Bill said, since I have spoken with you this long, let me finish, and when I am done, then you can take me in. The two men agreed. He shared the rest of the Gospel message, and both detectives prayed to receive Jesus Christ as their savior!! It was amazing. Needless to say, Bill was told to leave the park, and be very careful...PTL.

christianity came to india long before the the pagans of europe were raped, murdered and staked to say " jesus christ my saviour" i.e. I mean christianity came to india long before europe was christianized. Even now christians are a miserable 2% of the country's population. just shows how much appeal christianity has.

I'm sorry, but I don't see how that proves anything one way or another. There are numorous reasons why various religious faiths thrive.

In India, as in most of Asia, the society and the religion have been intertwined for millenia.

Don't know why you've got such a bone to pick with Christianity, but even if you're not religious at all, you can hardly use Christianity as the worst example of organized religion on earth.

Very true, some persuasive reasons could be state sponsership of religion, like emperor constantine and christianity.

You can believe in Christianity or any other cult. It does not bother me so long as you keep it to yourself and don't come knocking to my home saying "say jesus christ is my lord". if you assert self righteously that christianity is the only true path and that too in my home be prepared for battle.

Akash...since you ask a specific question, I will answer.

Liars? About what? The story of Bill in the park, in Delhi?  It is a true story, I witnessed.  Believe it or not, makes no matter to me.

During my time in India..I saw countless examples, of people without hope.  If the Hindu faith is such a place of solace?  Then why are nearly 1 billion souls so deprived?

I imagined India a much more technologically advanced society.  But it is truly a primitive third world nation.

Truly the ability to build and deploy a nuclear weapon, does not an advance society make!!

Peace Akash....relax, it is just a news article....

One, I bet you came in on a tourist visa and preached. Offence number one, visa terms violation. Bad karma dude !!! You reap what you sow .....

"Liars? About what? The story of Bill in the park, in Delhi? It is a true story, I witnessed. Believe it or not, makes no matter to me."

I am sure a small monetary consideration towards an underpaid government official with wife and kids would have gone a long way in this enterprise of yours. No I dont doubt the outcome. If I were poor I would worship Mickey Mouse for money.

"Then why are nearly 1 billion souls so deprived"

Try telling that to the 130 million muslims in India. I bet they would skin you alive. You are lucky the rule of law applies in India and allows you to say "Hell to all the heathens if you dont accept Jesus Christ as your saviour"

"But it is truly a primitive third world nation."

We had an advanced civilization, culture and religion when you were sheep herders. Comeon, make a move , we dont need certificates from you. You be content in that tribal religion of yours. I am happy with mine.

Even now christians are a miserable 2% of the country's population. just shows how much appeal christianity has.

Its God who Saves, and not man. We have the privilege to participate in the great harvest by bringing the Gospel. And nothing more. If God has willed it, the hearer will receive a new heart and a new spirit.
God is not a respector of people and He will have for Him a remnant from all nations and all people. It may only be 2% in 'the country' but I'd hazard a guess that many of them are genuine believers, and not lipservice believers only. Certainly not fair-weather believers to have to put up with persecutions. We pray for them, and for all hearers of the Word.

Acts 4:12

Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.

Despite the hardships this '2%' must face - they can take comfort and rest on the Rock: Jesus Christ our Lord.

Try telling that to a Muslim.

Keep your tribal cult to yourself and believe in what you said but dont tell me thats the only truth. I dont accept it and never will. In any case Islam has promised us all hell for not being muslims. So meet you in Allah's hell. Till then, adieu
