Labor Party meeting to discuss its future

The Labor Party central committee is meeting at this hour at Tel-Aviv's exhibition grounds to discuss the party's poor showing in the recent general elections.

The meeting is the central committee's first since the elections, and takes place amongst rising tensions between party boss Amram Mitzna and Binyamin Ben-Eliezer.

Right at the outset of the meeting, party boss Amram Mitzna said he had no plans to resign, and would lead the party to victory.

Mitzna added that Prime Minister Ariel Sharon would gain the support of the Labor Party in peace moves. Mitzna said that for Sharon to get close to moving towards peace, he would first have to "free himself of the bonds of [Transportation Minister] Avigdor Lieberman and [NRP chairman] Efi Eitam."

"There is nothing more important, and there will never be anything more important than peace," said Mitzna.

Top on the agenda at the Labor Party meeting is the disastrous showing in the elections, and the establishment of a board of inquiry to investigate the Party's recent failures.

The board is expected to make recommendations on changes to the Labor Party, reports Israel Radio.

The board will reportedly be made up of academics and politicians. The main question facing the board is what are the reasons for the decline of Labor Party.

Also on the agenda is the party's plans vis- -vis the Arab-Israeli conflict.

Mitzna also sounded off on the government's proposed emergency economic package, saying that if Sharon's government produced a "balanced" package, the Labor Party would not stand in its way.
