To: Chancellor Palpatine
is taking his cues from the Vatican leg of the Axis of Weasels

He has no authority to impose the pain of mortal sin on his diocese for supporting a war which is, at worst, morally neutral.

Even His Weirdness, Thomas Gumbleton, Peacenik Auxiliary bishop from Detroit, hasn't come out with anything this outrageous.

I'm damned if I can figure out why the hierarchy feels obligated to sound foolish on Iraq. It is as if everyone from JPII on down are intent on making pronouncements designed to infuriate the American laity, and to ensure that it will get further away from following stated Vatican policy on pretty well everything.

Even the Pope hasn't gone THIS far! He may not be happy about a coming war; but he hasn't yet pre-condemned those who are for it, or those who will fight in it. Besides, I saw on the t.v. one night, where there are a number of priests who do support Bush/Blair and others going into Iraq.
