Yes, Simon Cowell wasn't defending the Dixie Chicks, he was making a swipe at them. After the contestant from Utah, a blonde named Rasmussen, sang a country song, Simon said, "She should replace that Dixie Chicks girl!" It was pretty clear what he meant.
