Hot fires in Baghdad

Baghdad underwent Friday the most violent bombardment since the beginning of the offensive américano-British, a true flood of fire whose objective is to drive out Saddam Hussein of the capacity. With fallen from the night, tens of bombs and cruise missiles fall down suddenly, unchaining a din deafening in all the city.

On bank of the Tiger, administrative buildings, in particular the palate of the Republic - the main thing palate of Saddam Hussein, black animal of Washington are touched.

Enormous balls of fire and thick columns of smoke are released from the perimeter of this palate. The majority of the buildings located in the enclosure of the palate is in flames, an enormous fire which lights of a red gleam the heart of the Iraqi capital.

These raids américano-British, according to inhabitants' of Baghdad, constitute probably more the violent ones bombardments undergone by the Iraqi capital in its history.

The violence of the deflagrations, which have lasted for more than 45 minutes with 19H00 GMT, is incomparable with that of the air raids during the war of the Gulf in 1991.

Columns of smoke rise above the buildings touched in the metropolis of almost five inhabitants million, completely deserted and where the sky is illuminated by the shootings of the DCA Iraqi.

Enormous sheaves of fire rise in their turn of some of the touched targets, of which the presidential palate, and the breath of the deflagrations shakes a good part of the city.

Their shock waves are felt until in the hotel where place the majority of the journalists who cover the conflict.

The columns of smoke form a thick cloud blocking the sky.

The streets of Baghdad are emptied after the release of the air raid warning but the streets remain illuminated. Electricity is not cut.

The sirens of the ambulances traversing with open tomb the streets of the capital resound.

Whereas a pretence of calms returned, a new series of violent explosions shakes Baghdad again, at the moment when the Iraqi Minister for Defense, Sultan Hachem Ahmad, meets journalists. The intensity of the deflagrations makes vibrate the buildings.

A new lull is only precarious.

With new of strong explosions shake is of Baghdad.

The intensity of the bombardments did not prevent a few tens of militiamans out of weapons from expressing in the streets, according to images' diffused by the chain of television Al-Arabiya. To the cries "By our heart, by our blood, we will sacrifice ourselves for you Saddam", the demonstrators ravelled around one of the sites in flames, holding up portraits of president Saddam Hussein and the Iraqi flag.

The sirens of the ambulances traversing with open tomb the streets of the capital resound.

Kind of poetic in it's way.

Ask not for whom the ambulance tombs, Saddam, it tombs for you.

I know this war is deadly serious business, and I don't want to make light of any part of it, but these Babelfish translations just crack me up.

Anyone starting to get the idea that the military kept the 'good stuff' away from Clinton?

It's got to be a literal translation of bete noire, "black beast"--figuratively, one's most disliked foe.

It's a freebie translation service available on the web. It has a reputation for producing some unintentionally funny mangled up output.
