Debka says the “Syrian” bus we blew up was filled with Palestinian fighters.

I know we all have reason to be skeptical of Debka, but this is interesting if true:
Away from the main arena, a small yet illuminating scene played out just across the Iraqi border Monday morning. Syria complained that a stray American missile had struck a bus killing five civilians and injuring ten.
According to DEBKAfiles military sources, the only true fact in this terse account was that the bus was Syrian. The missile was no stray. It was deliberately fired from an F-15 fighter-bomber at a bus carrying armed Palestinian volunteers to join up with Iraqi forces, in order to make sure this was the last such Palestinian group of volunteers for Iraq. That F-15 made a piece of history; it carried out the first American air attack on a combatant Palestinian group. More will certainly be heard of this episode.
Has anyone heard any details on this story (perhaps from the Arab press) which might confirm or refute?

The official line is the bus came into view after the weapons had already been released and unable to be recalled. The bus drove onto the bridge and was destroyed.

After the Axis of Evil, I think Syria's on deck.

We are being hit by propaganda on all sides, so what difference does it make? Why be so choosey?

STRATFOR said the bus was travelling westward, i.e., from Iraq into Syria, and that one of the people on the bus was from Hama (sp?), a city full of fundamentalist Moslems that had rebelled against the elder Assad.
To: DWPittelli
Regardless of the source this report is probably true.
The key to this cicumstances is why would the US blow up a bridge near the Syria frontier when we have preserved all other bridges in Iraq and have gone well out of our way not to interfer with Iraqi commerece during this past week.

Let's see...stray missiles in Syria, stray missiles in Iran...do we have any guesses for where the next stray missiles might go? North Korea (too far, huh?) How about Saudi Arabia (home of OBL)...

The only problem with this theory is that the bus was headed to Syria from Iraq.<---Unless these brave warriors got a little eyewitness account of shock and awe and decided to get the hell out of there. And U.S. gave them a little going home present : )

I don't have a problem with Debka, but I enjoy bashing it on the on this forum. It is kind of like bashing the french (except I mean it when I bash the french).

Perhaps. OTH, if the report I posted at #17 is true, this could have been a warning to other busloads that the best they can hope for roadkill martyrdom.
It's not unthinkable that we'd go along with the "out of Iraq" story, to prevent calls to expand the war to Syria and/or Palestine, and corollary cries for a pan-Arabic jihad.
At this point I'm withholding judgement.
To: DWPittelli
Bullsh*t. With all this stuff going on, who really thinks that we are bothering to keep up with one, single busload of untrained irregulars?
This is more Israeli wishful thinking. They'd LOVE to the U.S. to fight their battles for them.

The official line is the bus came into view after the weapons had already been released and unable to be recalled. The bus drove onto the bridge and was destroyed. The DEBKA story sounds nice; however, bombing the bridge blocks an easy escape path for Sadamite vermin fleeing Bagdad to Syria. Coalition forces already bombed the snot out of the highway and sole fueling oasis between Jordan and Bagdad for the same reason.
If it turns out that the bus carried pro-Iraqi goof-balls as well, chalk it up as a two-fer.

This morning on a talk show, Tony Snow was briefly interviewed and he mentioned that people were boarding busses and heading into Iraq to join the war.
He mentioned that if we started to hear about busloads of male "civilians" being blown up we'd know what was going on.

don't know, but we have a 50/50 chance were going to hit a bad guy... hehe
