SAN FRANCISCO - If you like San Francisco's tap water, you can now drink it anywhere.
The first bottle from the Hetch Hetchy Reservoir in the Sierra Nevada was purchased for $1.25 Tuesday. It is the same water piped hundreds of miles to San Francisco residents.
"The sale of Hetch Hetchy Mountain Water provides a unique opportunity to promote San Francisco as well as raise public awareness of our precious water resource," Mayor Willie Brown said.
The idea to have the city's Public Utilities Commission (news - web sites) join the bottled water market was conceived by the mayor, said commission general manager Patricia Martel. The commission oversees the drinking water supply for most of the Bay Area. On average, the system delivers 210 million to 240 million gallons of water daily to the Bay Area.
Hetch Hetchy Mountain Water claims its source from the Tuolumne River, melted mountain snow and glacial streams. It will be sold at the city's three official souvenir shops and will eventually branch out to the zoo, airport and Fisherman's Wharf.
My "Glacier Springs" bottle is the crown of my collection - it happens to be from the Miami Municipal water supply, says so right on the bottle

That is true, but if you have a choice between buying a bottle for $1.25 and taking a free swig of the same stuff from the nearest drinking fountain, what would you do? Correct! - you buy the bottle so you can show it to Aunt Martha back home.
The water's fine, but the Hetch-Hetchy water delivery system itself has been neglected and funds for maintaining the system have been misappropriated.
As a native of NJ I've always marvelled at how bad the bagels and pizzas are out here on the left coast.
