Military has asked Americas Blood Centers for blood
Posted on 03/29/2003 8:27:11 PM PST by Lighthouse Lady
As was posted a few days ago, the military contracted with ABC and ARC to supply them with blood if needed. As of Friday afternoon, they have asked the blood centers for blood. Please call your local blood center and make an appointment, especially if you are O negative. The supply must be steady, not all at once. LL

May I add that A negative is also a VERY needed blood. It is almost always in short supply.
Please IF any of you are A neg and O neg.... please donate.
A person can only donate once every 58 days.

O negative is the universal blood type. O negative blood can be given to anyone; this is why it is used in emergencies when there is no time to type the patient. By the way, blood can be donated every 56 days not 58 but that is a small thing.

Centurian and Fighter,
Half of the blood supply is by the Red Cross and half by America's Blood Centers. I don't know where you are, but chances are you can go to an ABC blood center. Just call and ask the blood center nearest you and they will guide you.

Yes, that is true O neg can be given to anybody.
HOWEVER, if it is possible it get the same blood type for a woman of child bearing age, then that is much prefered. Remember, we have many women on the front lines now.
Three were taken prisoner.

If you go to the site, you can put in your zip code and they will tell you which blood center is ABC. To be fair, you can probably do the same for the Red Cross Centers as well.

Yes, every blood type should be available, I just wanted people to know, if they didn't that if they are O negative, they should make an appointment since they are the ones used in emergencies or where there is no time to type the blood.

Are the blood types still on the dog tags? My former soldier son says, yes.
In the civilian world folks do not usually wear info about their blood type. In the military they do so many times typing not always a big problem.
I do believe that all types should donate SOON. We could need the blood stateside as well, due to terrorism.
Thanks for posting this thread, by the way!!!
