Iraqis loot captured Baath party offices outside Basra

British soldiers poised to invade Iraq's major southern city of Basra have let a mob loot the local Baath party headquarters to show the US-led war was aimed at helping civilians and ridding the country of the regime's supporters. The building, five kilometres from the city was filled with vast stocks of food, including sacks of rice and grain that came from humanitarian aid deliveries. A British army spokesman said that normally looting was prohibited, because it was a sign that things had got out of control, but in this case it was decided to show Baghdad that the Baath Party was no longer in control. Aid organisations have criticised the chaotic manner in which food is distributed by U.S and British forces, saying that only the young and strong can fight through to grab food, while the ill, weak and elderly are pushed aside and often go without.

Looks like the aid organizations didn't do any better. The Baath party got it all, not the ill, weak and elderly (nor the young and strong either, for that matter, just the Baaths).

I bet the food is not distributed with banned weapons like the UN was doing.

From the title, I thought they were grabbing the staplers, three-hole punches, etc. - much like we do here in someone's cubicle after they've left the company.

"To the victor goes the spoils". I'd say this was the first step of victory for the Iraqi people.

I read that Iraq is one of the world's largest importers of cognac (doubtless taking care of the Tikritis). I suspect there is some real good drinking in that HQ.

That Baath Party HQ can be seen as a sumptuous watering hole for the Tikriti overlords amidst Shiite squalor.

If we had betrayed the Kurds to the Turks we could have made things easy for ourselves. Similarly if we would betray both Kurds and Shiites by ruling through Tikriti colloborators in classic imperial fashion we would make postwar governance easy for ourselves. But we're not shopping for a quisling thug to do our dirty work.

The Anglosphere has demonstrated that it will win because it has the will, the purpose, and moral vision.
