The congressman may have had many specialties who knows where he would be placed or his rank and status? Since you pointed out his rank (that I did not notice,) I still don't think it is a good call but understand why some may think he should go. The Pentagon made the right call on this.I think it is a democrat Senator/congressmen that has a son fighting.
Someone 40+ and retired/ and activated is not necessarily sent front line/ or even in theatre. They could be AD in the home front.
