WASHINGTON (AP) - An American prisoner of war has been rescued in Iraq, a U.S. official said Tuesday. The official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said U.S. Central Command was announcing the rescue in Qatar later Tuesday.
The Pentagon has listed seven Americans as captured by Iraq since the outbreak of the war.
The official said the rescue involved one of the seven.
The development came as American ground troops battled Republican Guard troops around Karbala, a holy Shiite Muslim city about 50 miles south of Baghdad. It was unknown whether the fighting was related to the POW situation.

As I understand it, they were (the press, AP) given this news in confidence and were not supposed to break it until CENTCOM had a chance to announce the news at a press conference being held at 3:00AM their time.
Methinks AP is about to have their cheese left in the wind by CENTCOM...
In the mean time...
PRAISE GOD!

The delay is due to notifying family. The report from CNN is not specifying whether this was a rescue or simply a recovery (POW escaped maybe)

9 dead, one saved. Is it better to give one man the choice to live or die, than to allow another to live in slavery? Depends on your philosophy.

I assume the family will be immediately informed of the good news, and should be. But why are we being told about it? Do we need to know at this time? There are still more P.O.W.s
