Iraqi tactics impress Arab press
BBC News Online ^ | 4-2-03

Iraq's adoption of guerrilla-type tactics and suicide-bombing in fighting coalition forces has largely impressed the Arab press, although some cast doubt on its long-term efficacy.

Many papers on Wednesday rail at a perceived lack of official Arab solidarity with Iraq, although the Kuwaiti press criticises Arab regimes for being too soft on Saddam.

Every day, the Iraqi resistance is becoming stronger... to prove that the man who is facing a well-armed army with simple and limited facilities... will not succumb or surrender... steadfast Iraq with the Arab nation by its side will not be defeated.

Al-Thawrah - Syria

Are the Arabs aware of the grave danger in their land and homes... or they will continue to be divided between the aggressors' supporters, spectators and those rejoicing at these misfortunes? What a shame.

Tishrin - Syria

The Pentagon announced on the 10th day of the war that it had taken control of 600 oil wells in Iraq. This is the principal objective of the American-British expedition.

The funny thing is that the Iraqi regime does not seem to notice. It scoffs at what it calls the preoccupation of American and British forces with advancing in the arid desert, forgetting that this advance means seizing control of the oil wells.

Al-Jumhuriyah - Egypt

The fate of President Bush and his ally Tony Blair and those supporting them reside on the palm of a devil... countries such as Kuwait, Qatar and Bahrain have tied their fate to that of the US and resolved to remain a military base. They have no hope for future survival as countries... without the presence of foreign troops on their land.

Al-Hayat al-Jadidah - Palestinian

The Iraqi regime wants to make many friends but doesn't know how to. The regime knows the technique of making many enemies despite it taking its last breath.

Al-Watan - Saudi Arabia

While the Iraqis are resisting the savage American aggression and defending the honour and dignity of this nation... Saudi Foreign Minister Sa'ud Al-Faysal surprises us with a fresh initiative urging the Iraqi president to step down and hand over his country to the invading forces...

We are also sad to hear another initiative by President Mubarak of Egypt about a new Arab order based on new modern bases. What sort of order does Mubarak want, he who allows warships attacking Iraq to cross the Suez Canal?

Any Arab leader who watches Baghdad pounded by American missiles, and the skulls of Basra children smashed by missiles, without making a move or moving his forces to help his brothers is the one that must step down before being forced to do so by the angry masses.

Al-Quds Al-Arabi - London

As the Arabs are confronted with this neo-colonial attack they are now required more than before to stand by the Iraqi people and provide political and moral support to help resist and repulse these despotic invaders.

Al-Thawrah -- Syria

It is sad and also very dangerous that our brothers in the Gulf are investing their money in supporting a dark Iraqi past, which is close to collapse, at the expense of the future of the Iraqi people... We tell our dear brothers in the Gulf that with sincerity and love we are really worried about your future.

Al-Ra'y Al-Am - Kuwait

Implicit US threats against Syria and Iran increases the number of those who oppose US attack on Iraq, and those who have doubts on the US claim that their war on Iraq is aimed only at removing weapons of mass destruction and changing the Iraqi regime.

Al-Sharq al-Awsat - London

The downfall of Saddam's regime will put the fighters in other parts of the Middle East in a defensive position.

Al-Quds - Palestinian

Iraqi men, women and children are the weapons of mass destruction which George Bush and Tony Blair and their war generals are searching out to destroy.

Al-Khalij - United Arab Emirates

The US' plans and policies have suffered a real setback and the time factor is in favour of Iraq's interest.

Al-Jumhuriyah - Yemen

We should unite, support our front and coordinate our efforts to curb the effects of this war on our country... and support our brothers in Iraq.

Al-Dustur - Jordan

The US and British administrations have a diversified way of planting hatred... This policy of duality will result in leaving every American and every Briton threatened in one way or another.

Al-Jumhuriyah - Egypt

The Iraqi resistance has shown ferocity, steadfastness and commitment to its cause... The issue is not that a weapon is used to achieve victory, the most important thing is that the soldier carrying that weapon should believe in the cause of the war he is involved in.

Al-Wafd - Egypt

The White House and Pentagon ruling Zionist lobby has managed to push Bush to launch an aggression war against Iraq. War on Iraq... will spread outside that country, and its political impact will be very wide.

Al-Arab al-Alamiyah - London

Israel is the only danger in the region and the one masterminding all the plots being woven against the Arabs. No one can separate the current aggression against Iraq and the Israeli hostile plots against the Arabs.

Al-Jazirah - Saudi

BBC Monitoring, based in Caversham in southern England, selects and translates information from radio, television, press, news agencies and the Internet from 150 countries in more than 70 languages.

This is press targeted at a population that is poorly educated (if at all), simple in their religious understanding and unkowning of a democratic way of government.

As with most issues in the world, the best changes will come from better western style economies, more education and democratic institutions.

Tactics??? Hey, achmed hiding behind a bush is NOT going to protect you from a bullet, much less a hand grenade!!

Read about a Marine sniper who could not believe that the Iraqis just kept popping up, one after another to man a machine gun, after he popped 3 of them in a row.... it sounded like one of those marksmenship "games" at the county fair.... you know, the ones you win a huge, colorful furry, stuffed teddy bear with a big bow.

OK, Marine which teddy bear do you want for your girl???

I see no evidence that they are impressed. All I see is run of the mill propaganda.

The arabs have proved that all they study in their colleges is not worth a bucket of warm ***. They should learn to build something that people want to buy instead of learning how to hate and wallow in their p** poor lives.

When some of these people start to comment that the gross national product of Isreal is equal to the Suadis and 10 times the size of Egypt thye might give up their pity party and do something to change their lives.

While they are writing this stuff publically, at least 15-16 of them have signed onto the coalition - without being named.

kAcknor Sez:

The Muslim world has no sense of history other than their own carefully constructed version showing them at the center and forefront. Sure, in the 14th century they were advanced for the times, and invented a few things. Today, they suffer from the myopia of past greatness.

The Japanese in WWII had the same attitude. Weapons and tactics were secondary to the heart & soul of their fighting personnel. It didn't help the Japanese in the long run, and frankly, we haven't seen crap from the Iraqis in the way of training of discipline. If this is the Muslim idea of great fighting men, they have a LOT to learn.
