DeLay Defends Bush Against War Plan Critics Also Labels Recent Human Rights Report 'Absurd'

WASHINGTON, April 2 /U.S. Newswire/ -- House Majority Leader Tom DeLay (R-Texas) blamed the sometimes negative tone of the media's war coverage on the "blow dried Napoleons" from the 24-hour news outlets in a speech tonight to the pro-Israel organization, Stand For Israel.

"The president is a man of faith and a man of confidence but it must frustrate him to hear the incessant carping of blow-dried Napoleons, hunkered down in their air conditioned studios night after night on the 24-hour news networks," DeLay said. "We know that day by day, children awaken, for the first morning of their lives, to God's freedom. This is the meaning of Operation Iraqi Freedom."

DeLay noted the controversy involving FOX News reporter Geraldo Rivera drawing troop positions in the sand. "President Bush has also drawn in the sand: A line beyond which the civilized world will not accept the behavior of evil men," DeLay said.

In his address to the pro-Israel group, DeLay labeled the State Department's recently released Human Rights Report as "absurd." The report - designed to document human rights conditions around the world - categorized Israel's record as poor along with China and the Palestinian Authority.

"There is no comparison," DeLay said. "Israel is governed by democratically-elected representatives; the Palestinian Authority is governed by a gang of murderers."

DeLay also addressed the pressures Israel will face once the world's attention is no longer focused on liberating Iraq and turns toward the Israeli-Palestinian situation. "Some will call on Israel to 'take risks for peace.' As a friend of Israel, and a lover of liberty for all God's children, we must reject any suggestion that its government negotiate from weakness, stand on an even moral footing with suicide bombers or trust the promises of terrorists.

"Any agreement arrived at through such empty negotiations would amount to a covenant with death."

Stand for Israel is a project of the International Fellowship of Christians and Jews, a twenty-year-old organization based in Chicago and Jerusalem with a proven track record of advancing Christian-Jewish understanding. It was founded by Rabbi Yechiel Eckstein. DeLay has increasingly taken a leadership role in foreign affairs through his work to expand freedom and his articulation of democratic principles. He was a forceful advocate in favor of President Bush's decision to confront Saddam Hussein's aggression.

I don't think Tom Delay speaks for the Bush Administration.

"But maybe he should. :)"

Only if the US is prepared to make war against the entire Arab world. Last time I checked, that's not our policy.

Great speech by the Majority Leader. Looking at the State Department's recent report, its clear why we don't want it to assume control of post-war Iraq. Its full of unreconstructed pro-Francophile Clintonista holdovers who would just as soon snatch defeat out of the jaws of our hard-fought victory.

Other than defending Israel, what was so offensive in Rep. Delay's comments? Like Rep. Delay, I'm tired of being concerned about offending muslims. It is muslims that ought to be concerned about offending us.

"I'm tired of being concerned about offending muslims." It's not about offending muslims, it's about backing US foreign policy and our President.
