Pfc. Jessica Lynch, rescued Tuesday from an Iraqi hospital, fought fiercely and shot several enemy soldiers after Iraqi forces ambushed the Army's 507th Ordnance Maintenance Company, firing her weapon until she ran out of ammunition, U.S. officials said yesterday.

Good for you...I would like to have a platoon of women looking at my back too...But for killing an enemy sneaking up on my back, I would rather have some big, hairy guy named Kablonski...and don't lie, any of you, so would you

Would she be the first woman to get the Purple Heart?

It would make the forthcoming movie better but I sort of doubt it as quite a few women found themselves in harms way in WWII.

This is going to be SO depressing for the "should women be on the front crowd," isn't it?

Oh no, of course not.
Who wouldn't want teenage girls on the front line of a war?

I don't like women in combat that much either to tell the truth. But if these reports are true this woman *is* a hero. One among many for sure, but a hero nonetheless. So let's all just knock off this crap about how she ain't!

Amen ;)

The initial reports on the ambush would make this story a lie--or a gross exaggeration-or the first ambush reports were wrong and it was a sustained fire fight-but I doubt that.

As I recall women would not have been in this position pre-Clinton. Not everyone in the at-risk positions are grunts. BTW,read the posts many of these people think women should be in combat. And the first post on this thread was pro that position. BTW, read my first post. Flame on, lol.

To Diddle E. Squat:

I agree with King_of_Hindsight. Pfc. Lynch did as she was trained - she did her job. It is likely that the others in her unit (that are now in bodybags) fought just as bravely as she did, but didn't have the good fortune to survive.

That most civilians have little clue what "just doing my job" means in the military belittles what many other unsung "heros" do on a regular basis. Those who know such common valor, describe a hero as someone who has truly gone above and beyond. The special forces soldiers who knowingly sacrificed their lives in Mogadishu to protect Mike Durant are heros, and the individuals who rescued Pfc. Lynch are cut from the same cloth, and yet they wouldn't even call themselves heros. Read a few Medal Of Honor citations and you will begin to have a clue of what I'm talking about.

How would you know? Has there been any account of the capture? I don't think I've seen one...

That was just for being rescued. Now that we hear she shot some Iraqi thugs, it'll be an ABC movie of the week.

But it would be wrong--terribly wrong and short-sighted--to use this isolated incident as a justification for making women a regular part of front-line combat forces.

But what if that has been 'their' dream since they were 5 years old?

On a local talk radio show here in Philly (1210 AM) Dave Christian said today that Jessica Lynch's arms and a leg were broken as part of her torture. Christian said he couldn't go into any further details, but he said that she was tortured extensively. He also said that the torture was probably intensified BECAUSE she is an Anglo female.
