Pfc. Jessica Lynch, rescued Tuesday from an Iraqi hospital, fought fiercely and shot several enemy soldiers after Iraqi forces ambushed the Army's 507th Ordnance Maintenance Company, firing her weapon until she ran out of ammunition, U.S. officials said yesterday.

She just became an American legend.

I agree. I think there's now a new meaning of the verb, "to lynch."

The only "Democrat" path this story is going down is the one that the Democrats paved by forcing onto the military the politically correct but dangerous and stupid policy that women should be able to serve near combat zones.

To me, this is an issue I feel strongly about, because of my connections to and my high respect for the military.

I know that women are a hinderance in the military. They are coddled, treated different, and allowed more excuses than men are. They even get a break when it comes to their hair length.

And so I will not compromise my values by flinging accolades at a person that in my view didn't belong on the battlefield to begin with.

Your main debate tactic appears to be stomp your foot that everyone doesn't agree and accuse everyone else of not tolerating your view. This is a debate chick. Stop arguing about everyone else being rude and mean and beating you up while you call them bizarre things like intolerant and bigoted.

This is not about you and whether you feel your opinion counts.

It is about a soldier who we are celebrating coming home when no one thought she would. And it appears she has some things worth admiring about her. Some of us are doing just that.

And so I will not compromise my values by flinging accolades at a person that in my view didn't belong on the battlefield to begin with.

Refusing to acknowledge, or prejudging, an individual's accomplishments or actions simply because of opposition to the group (gender) they belong to is pretty much the straightforward definition of bigotry and prejudice.

My opposition to women in combat roles will NEVER cause me to automatically refuse to recognize an individual's actions or accomplishments.

You should take this to a thread about the politics of women in combat roles rather than continue to insert politics into a thread about this individual soldier. Regardless of the merits of your political argument it continues to be an ugly exercise on your part to post it to this particular thread.

You do know that "Courage Under Fire" was fiction and there was no woman involved in an incident even similar to that during Desert Storm.

Yes, I could tell it was absurd Hollywood propaganda without even checking into it. But the minutae regarding varying accounts of combat experience was intruiging and has me thinking about Ms Lynch's case. I hope she is able to recover mentally as well as physically within the next few months so we can hear her perspective.

"This is going to be SO depressing for the "should women be on the front crowd," isn't it?"

Yes, it is.

(A voice from the "Don't Put Women In Combat Roles" crowd.)

Women at the front is a complex issue. This isn't the thread to tarnish with a debate of that issue. I don't want women on the front. That doesn't make me any less proud of her performance.

I will attempt to end some of this ugly exercise by at least not bumping my half of the argument anymore. Going to bed.

For the record, well done and welcome home Jessica.

Exactly. I think women at the front is a terrible idea. But I couldn't be more proud of Jessica.

Jessica's bravery and sacrifice are not reasons to multiply the error in discernment that intentionally puts young women in harm's way.

A 19-year-old girl blowing the head off another teenager, evil-doer though he may be, is not something I would want for my daughter nor society.

It's not a step forward for anyone.

You are the one who made a personal attack against me, and because I told you that you are intolerant, then you attack again. How nice.

I never once attacked you because of your opinion. You have a right to it. But its you and others that want to make Miss Lynch an unwarranted hero that are being intolerant of any view not like their own.

I didn't realize that this thread was here simply to fling flowers of worship upon a poor soul whose main accomplishment was getting lost. Now I know.

Frankly, my heros are on the front lines. My heros are also the men of the Rangers and Seals who had to go in and save her butt.
