Oh Great. I better dose up on allergy pills. One sneeze in the airport and they send you to a lepper colony.

Good table.
The problem with statistics from the U.S. is that we are erring on the side of caution in defining SARS cases. As a result we have most likely overstated the number of cases.
An example is Washington state, where I live. We are listed as having 7 cases. However, none of those cases are clearly SARS, and the state health bureaucrats are considering redefining ALL of them as something else.
All of our statistics are going to be suspect until we have a better way of clearly defining who has SARS. The disease is very early in its course. The amount we don't know vastly exceeds the amount we do.

Death rate from flu is .1 or .2% a year not 4-7% as with Sars.

Thank God this desease, unlike AIDS, is one without civil rights. Probably because AIDS is not spread through casual contact the way SARS is.
You don't catch AIDS from someone sitting 10 rows in front of you on an airplane.
...an important distinction when it comes to quaratines.

If quarantine had been in place for AIDS, it may not have been widespread. If we out-lawed cigarettes, and fast-food restaurants, lung cancer and heart disease would not be as widespread......which of course kill more people in this country than AIDS.
If we prohibit alcohol, we could prevent liver disease and drunk driving deaths......etc etc etc.
I guess it all depends on what kind of country you want to live in.

There have been no deaths reported in any infection in the US so far. In the US the death rate is 0%.
To: EternalHope
You do realize where the 3% number comes from, right? It was computed simply by dividing the number of cases by the number of deaths
Good points

My source was CNN, so it is probably wrong.

I hope you don't mind me saying.. but if we can.. you'd be the first person I'd put there. I'm not carrying the AIDs plague. I'm pro-straight.

This panic is more contagious than the disease and probably more deadly.
Absolutely correct. Vigilance is good, but panic is dangerous. It is best to save the adrenalin rushes for situations that are really important.

I found out today, that Reuters provides its service free to Yahoo.
I knew that Yahoo will hide the fact that most of their news stories came from Reuters. You have to go back 2-3 pages on your computer screen to see that a large % of so called news stories on Yahoo are Reuters BS like this story.

These masked chinese all look like Michael Jackson's kids.
i think quarantining is the right thing to do. what's all this talk about gov't imprisonment? Like they don't do that already: ruby ridge, elian gonzalez, waco, etc.
also, they can just plant drugs on you or use the war on drugs to detain you.
or, if you buy this conspiracy, perhaps some "pop-unders" that flash on your computer contain child-porn that you are not even aware of and you can be imprisoned for being a perv.
i think if the government is going to abuse it's power and falsely imprison folks, this measure would just be another one of a plethora of options that they can use to manufacture holding charges.

There should be a mechanism, stopping travel from countries experiencing unknown diseases and epidemics.......It would be much easier than quarantining someone with symptoms, that could be anything from a cold, to allergies.....and don't think it won't happen.
