The death rates for the flu, in the US are in the thousands a year. 35,000 plus or minus, if memory serves me. This SARS is just a new flu from the Chinese, where it seems all flus flow.

My brother spent extended periods of time, in the area hardest hit by this in China, he said that they commonly wear masks, it is filthy, and lots of disease is about.

The rule of law only matters to Republicans, when Democrats are in power, and vice versa.

I would imagine then that those who would be killed by this disease are not well when it hits them. Just like the regulare flu, old people and people who are sufering from other conditions that weaken the immune system (like hepatitis or Aids) are highly suseptiple to a lethal strain of this, whereas those who are otherwise in halfway decent health can beat it with little or no problem.

In other words, this is the Flu. Just another strain. No need to panic. No need to quarantene the planet.

No need to quarantine the planet, but stopping planes from the Orient until they have a handle on this, seems to be a reasonable thing to do. Also, they could make those returning from infested areas, sit in a quarantine like situation, until they were beyond the possibility of spreading it, and not likely to come down with it either.

Question to anyone: Why does the prez need to sign an executive order? Wouldn't public health laws/regs already be in place to cover something like this?

Well, common sense used to reigne in this country, until the demoncrapts took over, then all common sense was lost. Then the AIDS disease hit and all in-charge decided that you couldn't quarintine those ill (political correctness don't you know) and who was president at that time??????? the looser-in-chief klintoon, who, I believe signed executive orders that prevented "quarantining those with aids". Correct me if I am wrong. That is why executive orders had to be signed to over-ride the bogus executive orders of an incompetent president.

You're right. Being held in quarantine at gunpoint by your government is no big deal. Who cares if its only a couple hundred Americans (for now).

yup - I'm right. I'm ALWAYS right... ;0) Like I said, 'Moutain out of a molehill'... all that has been done is a disease has been added to a list - That's all... However, if you can show me proof that people are being held at gunpoint by our government because they have a disease, then I'll admit to being wrong... Take your time. I'm not in any hurry :0)

Does anyone know whether they would quarantine people in their own homes, or force them to go to another location?

As I recall from the early 50s, people with scarlet fever had to put a sign on their door, but stayed in their own homes...

I live in MI. While looking for maps I stumbled onto West Nile Virus stats for MI in 2002.

504 reported cases
41 deaths

IF I DID MY MATH RIGHT THAT WORKS OUT TO JUST OVER 8%

Actually the anounced hospital policy that I heard this week when dealing with a suspected case of SARS is the patient is put into a room like the use for TB patients (has air pressure to keep air inside and make it go through filters before recirculatiing or something like that) and anyone working around such persons wears a TB mask with a disposable mask with eye shield OVER the TB mask, the outer mask to be discarded on leaving the room.

Thank God this disease, unlike AIDS, is one without civil rights.

And I hope it doesn't get any or we won't have learned anything from the AIDS fiasco.

They are not going to quarentine aids because that would mean discriminating against gays.

But... I thought... that AIDS was NOT a 'gay' disease!

Oh... am I confused now!!
