Vet Makes Boxes and Builds Bridges to Families in Grief

CAMERON, W.Va. -- Machinist Paul Stern thought his military-memorial project would be a simple matter of making boxes.

The ones he builds are meant to display the folded American flags traditionally given to families following a military funeral. Working in his garage workshop, the 41-year-old Air Force veteran spends about five hours on each of the sleek triangular cases, which have glass fronts and narrow sides made of varnished oak and are just large enough to snugly fit a folded flag. He built his first in 1997 after the funeral of his father, Donald, a truck driver who served during World War II and Korea.
