Will someone explain the origin of "all your base are belong to us?"

There was a Japanese video game called "Zero Wing", and when the game maker translated it into English for American release, the translation of the text was so ridiculously bad that it was hilarious, and eventually became so well known that quoting its sillier lines became a cultural phenomenon among gamers, and then spread throughout the internet.
