New York Newsday and Dow Jones Newswire ^ | April 10, 2003 | staff report

An intelligence source says that United States Defence Secetary Donald Rumsfeld last week ordered the drawing up of contingency plans for a possible invasion of Syria, New York Newsday reported Thursday.

According to the newspaper's website, Undersecretary of Defence Douglas Ferth is working on a policy paper highlighting how the nation of Syria's support of terrorist groups is a threat to the region.

But the newspaper also reported that a senior Pentagon officer said he was unaware of any new planning involving Syria.

Secretary Rumsfled said Wednesday that Syria had allowed Iraqi regieme figures to enter the nation and provided Iraq with military technology.

Well, I should hope that someone at the Pentagon has a contingency plan to give Assad the Saddam treatment. It would be gross negligence not to do this. Of course, the world hates us anyway, we might as well let GWB take the heat to clean up the neighborhood.

We've had plans for some time. We probably have plans for the invasion of canada (and should enact, to spare the canadians any further embarrassment from Cretin's gov't).

What makes sense in this is that the Ba'ath Party is the major (only) party in BOTH Iraq and Syria. They're in bed with one another and are butt buddies.

Might as well kill all the snakes in the same hole. (no butt buddy pun intended.)

Well, since one reinforced Army division, 3 (?) Marine regiments, and unlimited USAF and Navy aviation took Iraq, why not Syria?

4ID has nothing to do. Why not send them across the desert and take down Syria?

If the reports are true that Iraq's military henchmen are there, then Syria is protecting terrorists and war criminals making them a legitimate target in the war on terrorism.

You're right. BTW, the Pentagon probably has contingency plans for the invasion, or at least embassy evactuation under fire, for just about every nation we deal with. These contingency plans exist, and are continually updated.

That does not mean an invasion is imminent (although in this case, I wouldn't rule it out either).

We probably have plans for the invasion of canada (and should enact, to spare the canadians any further embarrassment from Cretin's gov't).

I have seen those plans. They are brilliant. A Boy Scout Troop from Cutler, Maine will drive straght up the coast with cover from the sea being provided by the Bar Harbor Yacht Club. Meanwhile, a squad of bicycle mounted Campfire Girls will push North from Detroit, capture Windsor, Ontario, and clear the way for the capture of Ottowa by a company of Second Amendment Sisters. Special Forces of the US Forest Service are already working with dissident groups in Western Canada, which is expected to fall without a fight and quickly become the 51st State.

BTW, didn't we once upon a time have evidence that the Syrians were complicit in the Marine Barracks bombing in Lebanon that killed 283? Weren't they the funders/protectors of the terrorist group that did the deed?

Its better to do the whole job all at once instead of waiting for things to get out of hand again. Now, if they can just shut Powell up for a few weeks and keep him away from the U.N. everything should turn out o.k.

Until recently, the two ruling Ba'ath Parties were very much opposed to each other.

Air Force moving several MOAB bombs to Gulf region: Pentagon
59 minutes ago
WASHINGTON (AFP) - The US Air Force is moving several 21,000-pound MOAB bombs, the largest US conventional bomb, to the Gulf region, a US defense official said.

It was not clear what the air force intends to do with the bombs, which are most effective against troops or tanks in open areas.

"What we were told today is that they are on the way," said the defense official, who asked not to be identified.

He said several were being shipped to the Gulf region.

MOAB stands for Massive Ordnance Air Blast, but it is known informally as the "mother of all bombs."

Developed by the Air Force Research Laboratory at Eglin Air Force Base in Florda, where it was tested last month, the bomb is a larger version of the 15,000 pound "daisy cutter."

The "daisy cutter" was used in Vietnam to clear jungle for helicopter landing pads, in the 1991 Gulf War (news - web sites) to clear minefields and in Afghanistan (news - web sites) to clear caves and strike fear into al-Qaeda and Taliban fighters.

The MOAB has a satellite guidance system and a tail kit to steer it to within about 13 meters (14 yards) of its target.

It is too big to be dropped normally. It is dragged out of the back of a C-130 cargo plane

Two egomanical dictators had disagreements....I'd not say the parties were in disagreement. Syria has been a major channel of clandestine movement of arms to Iraq. ("Feuding cousins story" provided good cover.)

We used to have a joke in college (this was the eighties) about colonizing Canada, including this: "Do you have any idea how many tanks we could roll across the 'Peace' bridge before they even got their warplane in the air?"
