WASHINGTON (AFX) - The number of people in the US suffering from Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) has risen to 166 from 148, according to the latest toll given by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
To date there have been no deaths reported in the US from SARS.
Some 60 people have been hospitalised, of whom just one has required assistance in breathing, CDC director Julie Gerberding said.
Thirty states have reported cases of SARS. California has been the worst hit, followed by New York state and Washington state.
The majority of those infected had been travelling in Asian countries badly hit by the virus, Gerberding said.

Some 60 people have been hospitalised, of whom just one has required assistance in breathing If this trend holds, sounds like not much more than a nasty, nasty chest cold.

You think it doesn't sound serious because U.S. medical authorities define SARS so expansively, more or less any respiratory infection of someone who has been in one of the affected countries in Asia. That takes in many cases that are probably not true SARS.
Abroad, to be classified as having SARS, you have to have pneumonia, so that all the cases are far more serious.

At some time soon, we should have a working test. Use of that should clarify the stats.

I don't mean to minimize the whole SARS thing, but if there have been 166 cases in the US, and the mortality rate is 3%, and if there have been no fatalities in the US ... well, I'm having trouble with the math.

Current fatality rates for this disease are sitting around 3% Starting with the April 10 breakdown of SARS cases, WHO's table has a format change. Now, besides deaths, they also list the number who recover. The current world totals are 2781 cases, 111 deaths, 1337 recoveries

Actually - SARS cases have gone up over 100 cases in 7 days. You need to refer to the case count on 03/03/03
To: TrueBeliever9
CORRECTION: the case count on 04/03/03 NOT 03/03/03 I believe the range on 03 April 2003 was slightly over 52. I can't be sure because I track the daily count according to CDC and they are in my file at work.
