Just reading this story makes it sound like this guy was a total fake. As in drunk, out of it, or otherwise incompetent. Otherwise, tellers are supposed to follow certain rules when they suspect a bank robber. Last I heard, making fun of the guy isn't on the list. So, I take it this guy was a total fake.

Years ago when I was a bank teller, I had a guy fake that he was robbing me. He was joking around with me (more like flirting, now that I think about it) and I didn't "get it." When he saw the shock in my eyes, he said, "Candi! You know me! I'm just joking!" Well, sure I "knew" him. He was one of a bazillion customers who came by my window all the time. I didn't know he wasn't a BANK ROBBER! I never said a word to anyone, but I'm wondering now what would have happened to him if I had....kind of like the person who walks onto a plane joking about bombs.

It's not a good idea. I know of one incident in which a robber wearing a halloween mask stuck up a hamburger joint. The cashiers were starting to comply with his demands, but a cook in the back saw the mask and thought it was a joke and started laughing. The nervous robber shot the cook, who later died from his wound.
