This tends to happen to Arab armies when defeat is imminent. The officers split leaving their men to be butchered. It happenned in 1967, 1991, and apparently now.

This is because the officers and the men have absolutely noting in common for most units. If you have a Sunni Tikriti officer over Shiite conscripts he will be completely indifferent to their fate. Or an educated college graduate officering peasant/slum conscripts. This is why Arab armies or societies cannot work together well, because they really don't see themselves as co-citizens of the same nation.
