EU urges calm over US criticism of Syria
Jerusalem Post (AP) ^ | 4/14/03

Posted on 04/14/2003 2:24:45 PM PDT by truthandlife

EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana on Monday urged the administration of US President George W. Bush to curb its criticism of Syria which Washington accuses of harboring weapons of mass destruction and leaders of Iraq's toppled regime.

"The region is going through a very difficult process," Solana said. "It would be better to make constructive statements to see if we can cool down the situation."

In a separate news conference Monday, German Foreign Minister Yoschka Fischer said it was important to "concentrate on winning the peace, and not on getting into a new confrontation."

Showing the still evident split within the EU over Iraq, British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw, on a trip to the Gulf region, agreed with Washington that Syria needed to cooperate more.

Straw stressed however, that Syria was not the next target for the US-British coalition.

Solana warned the EU should do more to tackle the spread of biological, nuclear and chemical weapons.

"We may be confronted in the next years with some serious cases of proliferation," Solana said.

"Almost every new piece of intelligence about weapons of mass destruction shows that the risks of proliferation are worse than we had thought."

The war has badly marred relations within the EU between a pro-war camp led by Britain, Spain and Italy, and opponents of the conflict headed by France and Germany.

It is constructive for the US to warn Syria. If they don't get the message, the US will get destructive.

"...Solana on Monday urged the administration of US President George W. Bush to curb its criticism of Syria..." Syria has been, what I believe to be, a wolf in sheep's clothing for too long a time. I think it's about time to make them put up or shut up. Keep the ball rolling or we'll all have to put up with mindless terror and political mindgames for the next 20 years.

Syria has exactly the same defenders that Saddam had, is run by exactly the same Baath Party, sponsors exactly the same terrorist groups, and has exactly the same WMD program. It should get exactly the same treatment.

Okey-doke, Javy-babe, how would you suggest we confront Syria without hurting their sensitive feelings? Perhaps follow the UN model and whisper in Assad's ear for twelve years? Is that what you're suggesting? Or perhaps you're suggesting that we let the EU handle it for us . . . just as you've been able to bring peace and posterity to the Balkans?

No offense, Javy-babe, but your track record sucks. And you can put your "urges" where the sun don't shine. Oh year, I forgot, you're European. You can put your "urges" where the sun only shines three or four times a week.

I see, Syria is sooooo disadvantaged in this.

EU says:

"We are saddened by the success of the United States, because socialism can't compete with capitalism. We are saddened that individual freedom leads to greater wealth than us control freaks doing your thinking for you. We are saddened that we want to control the world, and you won't let us, no matter how much we insult you and shun you."

Stop, or we'll say, "stop" again!

Syria. The EU is doing a great job of imploding on their own.

Like all socialists do.

I think they've been a wolf in WOLF's clothing, sneering at the US for decades.

Time to slap them upside the head.

Canada would not form an alliance with Syria.

Never.

Now I know we have an a$$hole for a prime minister right now but we are definitely very pro Israel up here and the last time I checked, Syria was has still "officially at war" with Israel. There is no way and I mean no way - no matter who was in power - that we would ally with Syria over Israel.

Please don't forget that.
