Tea with milk 'safer'
From correspondents in Auckland
14apr03
SCIENTISTS have found that tea with milk is a safer drink than black tea, according to reports from New Zealand.
People who drink tea without milk have relatively high levels of oxalates, waste products that have to be passed out of the body in urine, the study at Lincoln University, near Christchurch, found. In a small number of people the oxalates accumulate to form kidney stones, the New Zealand Herald reported today.
Putting milk in the tea reduces the risk because the calcium in the milk combines with the oxalate and allows it to be excreted normally.
"So it's safer to drink tea with milk, or green tea," Lincoln food scientist Geoffrey Savage told the paper.
"I wouldn't ever say that tea is bad for you, but this is something in tea that needs some consideration."

There is a secondary benefit of milk in tea. Tea contains high levels of tannic acid which can lead to mouth and throat cancer. Milk raises the pH and reduces effects.

These guys didn't get the memo that milk is bad for you? Not to mention, an exploitation of our friend, the cow? (Or that bizarre cow-goat hybrid that half-and-half comes from.)

Tea basically sucks, milk makes me sick.
If God didn't want us to be happy, he wouldn't have given us beer.

"So it's safer to drink tea with milk, or green tea," I do drink my tea with milk, to the great puzzlement of my family. But I prefer white tea to the green.

I drank tea with milk when I was on TDY with a British Signal Regiment. I didn't think I'd like it, but it was great.
