[history]
As the campaign to recall Gov. Gray Davis enters its fourth week, a statewide survey shows the governor facing his lowest approval ratings since he took office in 1999, and nearly half of voters inclined to remove him from the job to which they re-elected him last November. With California's budget crisis deepening, 24 percent of registered California voters approve of the second-term Democrat's job performance, while 65 percent disapprove, according to a Field Poll released Monday.

D'oh!
California voters are idiots and my apologies to all California freepers - I am not referring to you. As a native but former Californian it is very distressing to watch.

I wonder how some of these poll questions were worded. Always suspect a poll where they don't tell you what the questions were.

Always suspect a poll where they don't tell you what the questions were. I think it was something like, "Davis really sucks, right?"
Seriously, the Field poll has been conducting this particular poll for 55 years. While the article makes clear that they changed their methodology between Wilson and Davis, just by examining the relative standings you can get a sense that Davis has achieved new lows, regardless of what the 'real' numbers might be.

Unfortunately, for a Republican to become governor of California, the RAT candidate is going to need a 75% negative rating. I almost slapped a "sarcasm" label to this statement, then realized it is too true.

He won the only poll that really matters. The election.
The people of California are not too bright.

At least 60% of California citizens are lousy voters!

I'm still not persuaded that Simon ran a bad campaign. He lost because the SacBee and other California media shut him off from the voters, because a judge allowed a bogus lawsuit to persist well into the campaign, and because Gerald Parsky sabotaged his campaign and refused to raise any funds for him. He still came close to winning.
It's ironic that the SacBee and other papers are now whining about how unpopular Davis is. He never would have been reelected without their assiduous willingness to lie and spin for Davis all during the campaign.

Davis' current approval ratings appear to be the lowest of any California governor since the Field Poll began measuring job performance 55 years ago. This is remarkable - he was just reelected a few months ago, handily beating Pubbie Simon. Are California voters asleep at the wheel? Do they have much brains? How could they give him his mandate to lead and turn on him so quickly.

To what extent will Davis' unpopularity rub off on Boxer when she runs next year? That, to me, is the crucial issue. The GOP have to paint her as part of the "Axis of Incompetence" that's been running California for some time..

What is truly distressing is the Calif. media. They allowed this guy (Gov. Dufus) to have one debate at 12noon and with only radio coverage . . . not a word as to why. They waited till after he was reelected to report the reckless state of the deficit . . . during his reelection not a word. He has consistently made the most incompetent decisions, purposely never holds a news conference and they give him a pass. Now, any campaign mistake, however miniscule, by Bill Simon and it was 24/7 for weeks. No wonder people say Simon ran a terrible campaign. This is what sickens me and it will be this same media that will go to work in 2008 to elect Hitlary . . . just watch!

Great question . . . how's NYs Sen. Hitlary doing for yuse guys?

No . . . it was by 4% and Simon had ZERO media coverage. The leftcoast media completely gave Davis a pass on all his failures.I think it was closer to 5% - 47.3% vs 42.4%. That means that over 11% more people voted for Davis than Simon. You can't blame the media because he ran his own campaign, the media didn't.

I wouldn't know, I hear she doesn't return phone calls! I was true to my vow to leave the empire state should Rodham win. She did win, commandingly. She was sworn in as Senator in early 2001, and I was true to my pledge to abandon the state by leaving before 2001 was up, moving to sunny, warm, and exciting Las Vegas, NV.
