Robbins Rants Over Critics Of His Antiwar Views
Actor's Speech Chides Baseball Hall Decision, Media Outlets
POSTED: 10:14 a.m. EDT April 16, 2003

Actor and peace activist Tim Robbins took another swing at the Baseball Hall of Fame during a speech at the National Press Club in Washington Tuesday, and also hit line drives at selected media outlets who have criticized his and partner Susan Sarandon's antiwar views.

Robbins wrote a letter to Hall president Dale Petroskey last week, saying he belonged "with the cowards and ideologues in a hall of infamy and shame" after Petroskey cancelled a scheduled Cooperstown salute to his baseball movie "Bull Durham."

Petroskey -- whom Robbins pointed out was a former assistant press secretary with the Reagan administration -- said he nixed the event because Robbins and film co-star Sarandon's opposition to the war in Iraq helps "undermine the U.S. position, which ultimately could put our troops in even more danger."

"I can't tell you how moved I have been at the overwhelming support I have received from newspapers throughout the country in these past few days," Robbins told the press club. "I hold no illusions that all of these journalists agree with me on my views against the war."

Robbins said we need the press more than ever to protect the constitutional right to free speech, praising sports writers who stood behind his letter to Petrosky.

"While the journalists' outrage at the cancellation of our appearance in Cooperstown is not about my views, it is about my right to express these views," Robbins said. "I am extremely grateful that there are those of you out there still with a fierce belief in constitutionally guaranteed rights."

While Robbins praised some journalists, he angrily berated others. In addition to the Cooperstown cancellation, Sarandon's appearance at a Florida United Way speaking engagement was canceled because of her opposition to the war.

"Susan and I have been listed as traitors, as supporters of Saddam, and various other epithets by the Aussie gossip rags masquerading as newspapers, and by their fair and balanced electronic media cousins, 19th Century Fox," swiped Robbins.

Robbins claimed double standards in the criticism of his viewpoints, saying nobody called him "unpatriotic" when he criticized President Bill Clinton during Kosovo. "The same radio patriots that call us traitors today engaged in daily personal attacks on their president during the war in Kosovo," Robbins said.

While Robbins championed free speech during the address, he dodged reporter's questions about the controversial incident at a post-Oscar party last month, according to the Washington Post.

Robbins reportedly threatened Washington Post reporter Lloyd Grove for interviewing Sarandon's mother, saying "if you ever write about my family again, I will (bleeping) find you and I will (bleeping) hurt you."

"Quite frankly, I don't know the guy and don't want to know him," the actor responded to reporters. "He has a right [to report] but it irritates me people use that right to pick on 13-year-olds."

According to the Post Sarandon's mother claimed in the interview that Robbins and her daughter had "brainwashed" her grandson about the war.

In the press club address Tuesday, Robbins said called "sadistic creep who writes -- or, rather, scratches his column with his fingernails in dirt."

well well well!

Tim Robbins peace acvtivist will hunt a reporter down and (bleep)[kill?] / hurt him if he writes something Robbins does not like!!!!!

What kind of free press defender / peacenic is this?

Tim Robbins does not believe he is being silenced or he would not have bothered to shave, shower and drive to the press club!

Nor would have said; "I can't tell you how moved I have been at the overwhelming support I have received from newspapers throughout the country in these past few days,"

He is much less concerned about being criticized or silenced for his political views than he is about being remembered for having come down on the wrong side of history.

He is trying to shift attention from his support of a dictator. A dictator so ruthless that he once arrested, tortured, killed and then left the dismembered remains of his political rival on the doorstep of her parents.

His rants complaining about the three week horrors of name calling he has endured ring hollow given his love for his self generated political limelight.

example: Robbins called a Washington Post Reporter "sadistic creep who writes -- or, rather, scratches his column with his fingernails in dirt."

The Washington Post is far from being one of "Aussie gossip rags masquerading as newspapers, and by their fair and balanced electronic media cousins 19th Century Fox"

For 8 long years I lived with the label; mindless right wing extremist wacko.

So unthinking was I that no less than the White House called me inhuman and nothing more than part of a machine, a vast right wing machine.

Tim Robbins is not concerned about the loss of his first amendment rights but rather he is concerned with attempting to restrict mine.

He and his ilk have and continue to come down on the wrong side of history, they registered their support with the Stalin and Idi Amin side of history.

"I can't tell you how moved I have been at the overwhelming support I have received from newspapers throughout the country in these past few days," Robbins told the press club.

So that settles it -- the only two things that support Robbins are journalists and a jockstrap.

I'm still surprised that he would stand up for Sarandon's 'honor'.....after all he won't even marry the broad he uses. But then, no one has ever suggested that she has much that resembles brains. It therefore makes sense that she would play the fool, shack up, and hire somone to raise his bastard children.

I'm glad he's making a fool of himself in public. He's proven to be a graceless, hateful boor. He should have simply expressed regret for the Hall cancelling the event, and moved on, but he's used it as a wheel to grind the axe of his seething immaturity. Go Tim, Go!

My column for UPI this week was in part inspired by the ignorant antics of Tim Robbins and his squeeze, Susan Sarandon. It's up on my webstie now, and will be on UPI tomorrow and on FR as soon as its "official."

Congressman Billybob

Latest column, not yet up on UPI, and FR, "Who's Next?"

Latest book(let), "to Restore Trust in America."

"hunt a reporter down and (bleep)[kill?] / hurt him...?"

Was he driving Sean Penn's stolen Killmobile?

Yes, and it also sounds like he's trying to drum up interest in a new movie, where he and Susan the Hag are the victims of repression of their right to free speech.

Timmy and Susie supported Saddam's staying in power like all the other leftists anti-war demonstrators. Saddam was a tyrannical dicatator that brutalized his people for years. Now that he has been ousted and the truth of his regime is widely disseminated Timmy, Susie and all the other Hollyweirdso and anti-war demonstrators have egg on their face. All of them should be made to "pay the piper."

Another anti-violence activist Sean Penn had his car stolen and the car was recovered but the two guns he had were missing.

If Robbins supports free speech, I wonder what his reaction to his....girlfriend's support of StopDr.Laura.com, a website and protest against Dr. Laura Schlessinger and her views about gays. I did not see or hear of him coming out against Susan's stance about this, or whining about not giving Dr. Laura her right to free speech. (Susan Sarandon is listed in the last paragraph).

Robbins, like all self-absorbed lefties, is only concerned about his OWN free speech rights, not the rights of others. Of course, as far as Tim Robbins is concerned, he is exercising his right to expose himself as a moron. And, of course, we have a right to ignore his speech.

Lloyd, sounds like this could be an interruption of communication terroristic threat, a felony of the 3rd degree in Texas, punishable by imprisonment from 2 to 10 years and/or a fine not to exceed $10,000!:^}

If the Robbins troop would charter a plane, go the Iraq, check out the damange, visit the jails, talk to the people and see the WMD sites I might be willing lend them an ear, but as it is they have no information nor no idea how the war really went.
