This is hopelessly silly, how will conservatives ever hold on to power if everyone our leader
abandons our president based on our respective "one special issues?" There, I've corrected it for you. What does Bush have to gain by supported this ban? This is another ridiculous example of screwing those who support him in a vain attempt to appeal to the protest crowd on the street that shout "Bush is Hitler."

snip...Indeed it was claimed by former President Bill Clinton.... Amazing you are quoting x42, since when has this S.O.B. ever told the truth ??

It's probably too early in the morning to try to write a coherent piece, but here goes:
The way I interpert this is that it's our job to be certain that this nonsense never reaches the President's desk.
That means calling your Congressmen and Senators, and very politely, but firmly and inexorably, letting them know that you have zero tolerance for this abomination.
And follow it up with letters. Polite, blunt, preferrably one page with footers & headers so it has a chance of being passed around among their staff.
And keep reminding them- up 'til election day...

...300,000 troops coming home means nothing in national electoral politics as far as their actual votes....Perhaps not, with their actual votes. But their influence on friends and family may extend well beyond their numbers. Do you remember how close the last election was?

The comments sound just like the Democrats on abortion. Bill Clinton could do anything and everything wrong as long as he was pro-abortion. Conversely Bush can do everything right but will lose his base if he supports any gun restriction. Talk about losing the forrest for the trees! Go ahead and vote for a Dem instead of Bush. They will certainly be pro-gun NOT!

And then Hillary will executive order a gun registration, followed by incremental bans. Way to go, Mensa militia.
At least billary wouldn't piss down our backs and tell us it's just rain!
"If you give them your vote even when they sell you out, they'll keep selling you out."
This means nothing to you? He won several states on this one issue, states that otherwise would have gone to albore. He will follow in his daddys footsteps. Blackbird.

many gun owners say they'll dump Bush in 2004 and vote for someone else if he signs new legislation extending the prohibition. And vote Democrat? Give me a break!

I think this whole thing was a setup. Someone in the White House either wanted to test the waters, or else was afraid Bush was planning on publicly supporting a continuation of the ban, so he/she leaked the little tidbit that resulted in the single-paragraph blurb buried deep inside the Washington Post. Now that this whole crapstorm has resulted from that one graf, they now know this is political dynamite, and we'll probably never hear another word about it.
