New Material Cleans Air, Water
Upper Valley Scientists Say Nano-Mesh Removes Contaminants
POSTED: 8:41 p.m. EDT April 14, 2003
WINDSOR, Vt. -- A Vermont-based company is working to safeguard the air and water.
A start-up company called Seldon Technologies is developing a material that eliminates biological contaminants, like anthrax and smallpox.
For nine years, Christopher Cooper and five other Upper Valley scientists have worked to develop a black circular material made of carbon molecules. It's called a nano-mesh and its developers said it can eliminate just about any biological threat.
"This material is capable of completely sterilizing all the bacteria in water, acting as a kill zone," said Cooper.
It works sort of like a filter. Bacteria are killed when they pass through the mesh. The technology will also function as an air decontaminator.
"You would put our material over a vent (and) it would capture airborne material such as anthrax and smallpox, which in today's world are two great fears," said Alan Cummings, another Seldon scientist.
The technology has also piqued the interest of the government. Seldon officials said negotiations are underway with the Army to produce a combat straw. It would permit a soldier to drink water he found in the field and know that it was safe.
Seldon labs will produce the material in Windsor. They expect to market the nano-mesh during the summer of next year.
And that's series and hugh!
Boy I just love these in depth "how it works" type explanations! I guess it is kinda like the "Water Pearl" that I marveled at in Las Vegas once upon a time.
Yeah, from an outfit with a mailing address of some unit in a motel! LOL
