Thanks for posting that sweetliberty, it is a very moving site, indeed. Maybe I missed it in the news, probably no doubt (?), but I've not heard of her before your post.

Or else the media is indeed doing the worst job, ever by neglect! Not to take away from the POW's recently rescued (including 2 women injured), but why isn't Lori Piestewa's story being told, I wonder? JLO

"why isn't Lori Piestewa's story being told, I wonder?"

It has been posted on FR, but I think it got lost in all the excitement over the rescue of Prv. Jessica Lynch. Perhaps more will be told before it is done.

Well, since I can't sell any burkas tonight AND
my fat cat is telling me it's time for bed; soooooooo:

Good night, all!

May God bless all who come to the Canteen.

May God bless & keep safe all our troops & their famlies!

Dear Lord,
There's a young man far from home,
called to serve his nation in time of war;
sent to defend our freedom
on some distant foreign shore.

We pray You keep him safe,
we pray You keep him strong,
we pray You send him safely home ...
for he's been away so long.

There's a young woman far from home,
serving her nation with pride.
Her step is strong, her step is sure,
there is courage in every stride.

We pray You keep her safe,
we pray You keep her strong,
we pray You send her safely home ...
for she's been away too long.

Bless those who await their safe return.
Bless those who mourn the lost.
Bless those who serve this country well,
no matter what the cost.

God, Bless America!

It is with a heavy heart that I must say goodbye to the Canteen.

I came here initially to show support for our military, active duty and veterans, and to be part of a support system for the family members of those who are deployed.

Over time, I've noticed the disappearance of our our active duty posters and several others, and today received an e-mail from one of my pen pals overseas. He said he had stopped visiting the site. That was the clincher. It makes one wonder just how many other active duty members have done the same.

I've also had several requests from folks to be removed from my ping list. Many were there in order to receive my personal "Thank You" each day, whether for their service or for enduring the sacrifices of being a family member of a deployed service man or woman. The rest were there because I simply wanted to say "hello".

My support for our military, past and present, and their families will never wane. There are many ways to show support and I'll continue to do so in those ways. I'm very thankful to the Canteen and to those who have posted several of the methods of support.

I'm also thankful for the opportunity to meet some very fine folks at the Canteen over the past several months. I'll see some of you on other threads.

Most of all, I'm thankful to those who have done their part to ensure we have the freedoms we enjoy in this country. The freedoms to choose our own courses in life. The choice I've made today wasn't an easy one at all but one I freely chose.

Take care, y'all.

A Singer, a Song & America's Armed Forces

By Linda D. Kozaryn / American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, April 16, 2003 – Everyone knows Donald H. Rumsfeld is one tough hombre. Yet today, a country singer made the straight-talking, no-nonsense defense secretary wipe tears from his eyes.

Darryl Worley gave a 45-minute concert at the Pentagon for several hundred service members, civilian employees and family members this morning. The show was broadcast live to troops overseas, and an audio webcast is available here.

After singing a mix of down-home country songs, with an extra dollop of patriotism, Worley introduced his chart-topping hit "Have You Forgotten." He said he wrote the tune after a USO trip to Afghanistan and the Middle East in December 2002.

"I wanted to do something to pay back the soldiers for what they'd done for me and for us as a country, to bring some honor and respect to them," he explained.
