Actually, It started at an army base in Kansas and was spread around the world by the 'doughboys' going off to WW1. It is called the Spanish flu because the Spanish were the first to identify the virus.

It was first reported at Camp Funston in Kansas on March 11, 1918, but was in Guangdong in February, perhaps earlier.
